Newbie: Help With Firefox
« on: May 23, 2005, 02:35:41 am »
[EDIT]: I'm using an SL-C3000...

I've been trying to follow the instruction on Meanie's website on how to install Firefox but I've been unable to find some of the packages that were listed under the X/Qt installation section... I went as far as I could but X crashes when I start it.

I eventually downgraded the server version to 0.0.8 following the instruction elsewhere in this forum (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=6185), i.e.

1. xqt-fonts-misc
2. xqt-fonts-75dpi
3. xqt-server (0.0.8)
4. glibc-locale-eucjp
5. xbase-etc
6. xlibs
7. xqt-startup-scripts
8. xbase-client
9. blackbox
10. rxvt

and after installing Firefox, I get the following error:

Quote
error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file. No such file or directory

I'm a bit of a tinkler but I know nothing about Linux and I'm at my wit's end trying to get this up & running...

Any help & advise would be gratefully received...

Calvin

you are missing gtk_1.2.10.1_arm.ipk

try the following feeds which should have most the files you need

[a href=\"http://xqt.sourceforge.jp/feed/]http://xqt.sourceforge.jp/feed/[/url]

http://xqt.sourceforge.jp/feed-testing/

and guess how many hairs I pulled out trying to figure out everything
well, it forced me to brush up on my Japanese :-)

The 2.0 in the error leads me to believe a gtk-2.0 variant (2.0/2.2/2.4/2.6) is needed, not gtk 1.2.

you're right. i just noticed that i had gtk2_2.4.13 installed before and it did not uninstall cleanly, leaving some libraries behind

Thanks for your responses...

This time I've installed the GTK-2.0  but I'm still getting exactly the same message

Having said that, one thing I have noticed this time when I installed Firefox was the error message saying that it has other dependencies, please install those too...

Meanie... the files that I cannot find on the XQT page are

# libgcc1 [libgcc1-zaurus_3.2.2-0_arm.ipk]
# freetype [freetype_2.1.5-1_arm.ipk]
# atk [atk_1.6.1_arm.ipk]

I finally got Firefox to work, and I'm under the impression that Firefox uses stuff from both 1.2 and 2.0 gtk packages.  I actually have them both installed for one reason or another, so it won't hurt to have them both on the zaurus.

I got error messages about dependencies too, but it still works.  If you know that a file was installed and Firefox yelps about it missing, just search for the file as su:

find / -name <file_string>

Then modify LD_LIBRARY_PATH:

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=<wherever_the_above_tells_you_your_file_is>:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

As far as finding packages, I googled some of them.  Just surround the string in quotes and you should be pointed to the right place.

Hope this helps!

You've come to the right place for help. Boards like this are one of the three or four best things about the internet.

It's a good thing you're a tinkerer, because Linux is the tinkerer's dream. Give me  a closet, a keyboard, some Perl, Linux and/or Unix and some screenglow and I won't miss being being kissed by Anty Emma at the family reunion this year.

I wish I could help you with your present problem, but alas I cannot. But when you finally figure it out I've surely envy you. Firefox on my Z would be most cool, especially if it's a couple of years down the road when I'm using my SL-C8000 10Gb internal HDD unit with Wifi built in, my cell service anywhere card plugged in,  and I'm driving down the road using Firefox to find out exactly where that Geek Symposium is being held at...

G'luck

you will be able to find those packages from the pdaxrom site (where you probably got firefox from)

I am also having problems with the instalation files when I try to install xqt-fonts-misc_4.3.0-3_all.ipk it gaves me an error telling me that the filename of this package includes character this application can't handle. And that I need to change the filename and retry the instalation.
What can I do, plaease advice.
