Synching with Linux 8.2 -- RPM, WindowMaker, Howto?
« on: March 24, 2004, 02:03:20 am »
Does anyone know:

Is there an RPM for QTopia Desktop for SuSE? Trolltech.com does not supply them, and redirects to SuSE, who, if they have one, have buried it too well for me to find.

Does it run under WindowMaker?

Has anyone put together a unimaginative, reliable howto about synching Suse 8.2 to a Zaurus 5600? I\'ve read so much about this that the perplexity is almost worse than knowing nothing at all, and there seem to be many creative solutions. All this creativity makes me a bit nervous, though, as I\'m just a Linux fumbler. I\'ve found references in threads to something in the Unofficial FAQ, but can\'t seem to find what they are talking about. I have found this which is for 9.0. It seems sensible -- has anyone tried it?

Thanks in advance!

What about

http://www.trolltech.com/download/qtopia/index.html

and the link at the bottom of this page?

But doesn\'t have the 5600 Sharp DTM Pim?
Such that this would not sync with QTopia Desktop?
You can take KO/Pi.
KO/Pi syncs with Sharp DTM and syncs with another calendar.ics file on the desktop.

Would this help?

For my fellow newbies: there is a 14-page-long thread on this; also, it looks as if Zautrix is a creator of KO/Pi, the website for which is here, where you will find   KOrganizer for the Zaurus. There is a list things to try in this thread. The Unison (\"open-source, cross-platform file synchronization tool\") web site is here.

Personally, I am still having trouble (obviously) translating all this information into a sequence of actions. Could some kind soul recommend one? USB connectivity (with the cradle?) would be nice (the link for the linux_ethernet-over-usb-howto in the UFAQ is dead), followed by file transfer, followed by synching of whatever can synch.

PS: Yes, that is indeed the page for the QTopia desktop downloads - thank you!

I\'ve found the USB/Linux Howto and am carrying out its instructions even now. However, I think I have noticed a problem. Menuconfig defaults to having most things checked (as M). Carrying out only the instructions specified, I think I am loading every module known to humanity (with the exception of \"USB Communication Class Ethernet device support\"). It\'s been patching for the past ten minutes, and I see familiar words like Tekram and Belkin fly past, among other things. Um... will this cause me any problems? Or am I really supposed to load absolutely everything? Or will this nice script at the end just take care of everything anyway?

K, I have spent a large amount of time researching and working on correcting Sharps failure in this department. If you check out my project ZSREP (Zaurus Synchronization Reverse Engineering Project) at my website at http://www.cyph.org/zsrep/ you will notice there is a files seciton (http://www.cyph.org/files/?project_id=2). Within this section is HowTo describing how to configure the Zaurus SL-5600 to allow for synchronization using a cradle. This document is called zsync_suse9_conf.pdf. Now, since the Reverse Engineering of the Synchronization protocol has not been finished, I have come up with a temporary synchronization solution using KO/Pi and SFTP. The scripts I have written to handle the synchronization are available in the  above described files section. Hope this helps. The above described HowTo goes into the reasoning for why things are done. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask!

Thanks for your help! Sadly, I seem to be making things worse. I applied the patch, and I got the expected message in the /var/log/messages file, but usb-0 (or any new network connection) refused to appear, and attempts to synch resulting in a wildly flashing Zaurus.

I then tried updating my kernel from 2.4.20 to 2.4.21, as apparently it does not need the patch, which resulted in the message in /var/log/messages vanishing (and temporary loss of klauncher, and some kind of libGL error when I open YaST -- perhaps I need to upgrade the GLX driver thing now??).

I\'ve done all the steps described in your document, and still nothing. The modules that are described as necessary in the ZUG howto (usbcore, usb-uhci, and usbnet) all appear (lsmod) without having to be installed individually. Is there some other driver that is missing? Again, thanks for any and all help.

I found the problem. It was, er, the cable. I don\'t want to say more than that because I feel very silly. Thanks to everyone in the Newbie forum for their forbearance.
