I bought my wife a used eMac about 6 months ago, to replace her WinXP Home desktop, which was just too vulnerable. I run a Xandros Linux box, and an old Win XP machine as a webserver and utility machine for stuff Linux doesn't do yet. (My Abyss X2 server runs on Windows, yes, but it's reasonably secure, and its the paid version which I would have to pay for again to switch to the Linux version of.)

Uggghhh, only about 10 more years and we won't have any more of them in the schools....  Pain to work on.  Fun to carry a lab of 30 or so up a flight of stairs too.

Yeah, the sucker is heavy.
The medical & genetics research institute that about half of my half-time hours as a semi-retired beast of burden are billed to runs about 90% Win2K and 10% Macs, I expect 10.4 ... for the graphics, they tell me. My Zaurus may just be the only machine that ever signs in to the hospital/institute network using Linux, and I only use the free networking on coffee and lunch breaks to check my email etc.  The IP guys who know me are duly impressed that a lowly porter is the only person they know of at MSH running Linux ... one or two of 'em run Fedora or Suse at home. That said, one of the research institute IP guys has a SL 5500 in his desk drawer.

My main, shared home machine went from Win98, to Ubuntu, to Mepis, to a new Intel Mac.
After a month of Mac, I thanked my wife for humouring me by using a Linux desktop OS for years and then humbly apologized for doing that to her.
With Mac we both get the GUI and I still get the shell. Good deal for both of us.
