Pocket Workstation Headaches ...
« on: July 26, 2005, 04:54:22 am »
OK looks like I'm not having much luck getting anything semi-complicated working on my Zaurus :-(

This time I tried Pocket Workstation. I downloaded http://www.chuckster.org/zaurus/zaurus-deb...-v18-b01.tar.gz and http://www.chuckster.org/zaurus/xqt-debian-install.zip and ran the install script. It all seemed to go OK except for the following errors:

===============
/bin/ln: `/home/root/.icewm': File exists
Debian files extracted.
ln: /etc/rc5.d/S50mnt: No such file or directory
ln: /etc/rc6.d/K50mnt: No such file or directory
===============

I notice that rc5.d and rc6.d are in fact in /etc/rc.d/rc[5|6].d so I manually made the symlinks to /etc/rc.d/init.d/mntloop .

However, wherever I look the debian executable doesn't exist! When I try to execute startd, it can't find icewm-session (and can't unmount /proc - operation not permitted, that's probably a side effect of something else). Anyone got any ideas?

Given all these problems I've been having getting pre-packaged things working (which I presume are pretty standard things), what are the chances my original install is a bit weird? (This IS a secondhand Zaurus - purchased from Sofmap, I presume they already did the factory reset though.) What might be the most painless way of returning the whole lot (ROM and HDD) to the factory-shipped state so I can start fresh (before I've got too much stuff installed)?

There are several steps to installing PocketWorkstation:

Install X/Qt

Install full blown X/Qt jumbo pack by first installing xqt-gtk-jumbopack_0.4.3-0.6_arm.ipk followed by xqt-debian-scripts_0.5_arm.ipk. This requires 40MB of free space in RAM/hdd2 plus space for temporary space.

Or install X/Qt jumbo lite by simply installing xqt-debian-jumbo-lite_0.4.3-0.1_arm.ipk which is a cut down version of X/Qt that will only allow you to run Debian. This only requires 11MB of free space in RAM/hdd2.

Install PocketWorkstation

Install Debian using xqt-debian-install.sh (make sure to use the latest version 0.3.6)

You can use my prepackaged tarballs zaurus-debian-jumbo-v18-b01.tar.gz, and optionally  zaurus-debian-doc-v18.tar.gz and  zaurus-debian-openoffice114.tar.gz

Or use the original debian tarball zaurus-debian-big-v0.18.tgz

You can install to /hdd3/debroot, /mnt/card/debroot or /mnt/cf/debroot
You will need 512MB for Debian and 64MB for swapfile

the command 'xlauncher debian' will start it

So far I've tried that several times using /mnt/card/ on my C1000s SD card. Never gotten debian to start :-( X/QT is as far as I get :-(

Are the files on the chuckster site the most up to date?
I'm sure it's user error on my part though! lol

the debian install scripts on chuckster's site is only 0.3.5

you really need 0.3.6 on a C1000 and don't forget to install xqt-debian-scripts_0.5 because the jumbo pack only contains xqt-debian-scripts_0.4.

Now I'm a bit confused.

I can understand that the debian install scripts are the wrong version on the chuckster site. That's no probs, just a case of down load the latest version and run again, where do I find the most up to date version?

The xqt-debian-scripts thing, now that's the part that confuses me. Ok they are wrong in the jumbo pack, so that means I need to download the correct version and some how replace them right?

My problem is that I again don't know where to download them from and wouldn't have the first clue at how to replace them, where to replace them or which step of the install I should replace them (i.e. before after installing debian).

I'm sure it was mentioned in the other thread, but as was a lot of other stuff I couldn't understand. Sorry, if I am being thick again :-(

read this and follow the download links:

[a href=\"http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/jumbo/xqtjumbo.html]http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/jumbo/xqtjumbo.html[/url]

just install the xqt-debian-scripts package. it will upgrade the files installed by the jumbopack, then re-run the latest debian-install shell script.

Meanie, you're a star, however one of your links:

Also an updated version of xqt-debian-scripts (version 0.5) is available here.

results in a corrupt zip file being downloaded :-(

It did indeed, you're so cool for helping like this! I'm going to attempt to install the debian from scratch, wish me luck :-)

OMG

If I could stand beside myself and give myself a slap to make sure I wasn't dreaming, I would!

Debian worked and after a "slight" delay, Open Office opened.

I'm shocked, stunned, but oh so happy!

Meanie, what a great thing, thank you so much! And thanks to those who's work you've built upon. It's all so incredible! I can't believe I've got such a powerful office suite running on such a teeny tiny device. :-)

I think my Zaurus experience is about to be changed forever for the better!

Cool, thanks for that Meanie!

Installed debian scripts, updated the version of the install script, ran it ... and now Debian works! ... if I log in as root ... it keeps complaining about a lack of sudo otherwise :-(

Is it starting to sound like my install is a little bit weird? Or is this sorta thing "normal" (eg. a lack of things like sudo)? How painful (and risky) is it to attempt to wipe the hard drive and return it to the factory-shipped state so I can start again, knowing that there isn't anything "weird" on the hard drive?

Bleh ... teaches me to post when I've just woken up!

I mean, I know I can reset the ROM to whatever came out of the factory (remove battery, put it back in, turn on whilst holding OK, select option 3, select option 1) ... but I assume this doesn't rewrite the files on the hard drive itself?

doing a factory reset will indeed reset it to its original settings. all your installed apps will disappear from /hdd2 and /hdd3 will be reformatted and ends up completely empty. the z also returns to japanese locale and everything will be displayed in japanese.

but anyway, sudo is not installed by default on the sharp rom so you will need to install it if you want it. the reason sudo was not installed by default is compatability with cacko since it already hhas sudo pre-installed already and i didnlt want to override it and break cacko, plus it works without sudo, but it is a bit annoying so just install sudo.

btw, where in sydney are you? we could start a sydney zug

Oh cool, just what I need ... I'm almost certain I've stuffed up a few other things anyway :-)

Backing up now (doing 2 gig through 802.11b takes a while!) ... hopefully things will work this time around.
