Saying Goodbye To My C3000 Soon!
« on: August 01, 2005, 04:08:26 pm »
Hey guys,

Thanks to everyone for all their help in these forums. I will be thinking about selling my C3000 very soon. I will post in the for sale forum when I am ready.

I just bought a palm Life Drive. By no means does it compare or even come close to what the C3000 is and can do, but for my needs, it is just what I need at the moment.

My C3000 is amazing, I have learned so much, but also spent lost of hours, both when I should have  been working and off hours. I have a Fujitsu S6120 and I do not need a laptop replacement, which is what the C3000 is, or can be.

I need a PDA for everyday use. I was able to install X/Qt and Debian, thanks to Meanie's great work. The screen is just way too small for my aging eyes. Plus the inconvenience of having to carry a wifi card moved me over to palm. I'll never go back to Windows Mobile!

I started with palm PDA's in '99, then moved to Handspring, then Pocket Pc, then Windows Mobile, then Zaurus SL6000, then Zaurus C3000, now I am back to palm.

I will keep my eyes open for a clamshell Zaurus with built in Bluetooth and Wifi, Plus the screen resolution of the SL6000, Plus possibly a bigger screen! I can dream!

Thanks again to all that have helped me. Send me an e-mail if you'd like to persuade me to sell now (perseus7@earthlink.net) or to find out about my experience with all these gadgets. I have PDAir Case, Pentopia Stylus, Asus CF Card, 1gig Sd, 1Gig CF, Screen protector since day one, Box and complete packaging.

I'm curious, why did you decide to go with the LifeDrive over other Palm offerings? I can understand moving to Palm for simple PIM and other things Palm does well, just not the LifeDrive in specific.

I decided on the Life Drive based on my need for built in wireless. I did not want to carry a sd card for internet connection, like I had to for my C3000 (Asus Cf Wireless card).

I really have no need for the hard drive but with built in Wifi & Bluetooth, I figured I could not go wrong. I have had some growing pains going back to palm. Had to return the first unit because it would keep resetting all by itself, and the center button did not work. The second unit's center button worked from the start, but, I had to do a hard reset 3 times - but that was because of software installation issues (not compatible?).

All in all, I am very happy with it - although when I turn my Z on to transfer information, I get second thoughts for a second.... What really drove me back to palm was that I was not able to find a decent(in my opinion) finance program. Debian is awesome but I need instant on when it comes to entering transactions. Plus the small screen made my eyes hurt, after prolonged used. Accounts & loans and Quick Budget is what I am using on the palm. PDAbs & Exercise & Health tracker are awesome as well.

What I really miss is Opera Browser with VGA Screen for web browsing. I will just have to adjust, I guess. The palm web browser Blazer is good. But Opera is Awesome!

Do you honestly need to sell the C3000, do you need what little money you'll get for it? Probably less than half what you paid for it.

I've never used a Palm, but I have a similar feeling about my Z vis a vis my Psion. My Z just isn't as instant, simple or intuitive as my Psion Netbook, even with the (brilliant) pdaXrom. On the otherhand the Psion GUI is looking very dated now, and I know its Opera browser is getting old and finding more web pages it can't display properly. And the Psion is huge.

However I couldn't ditch any of them. I sold a Psion 3 (not even a 3a) years ago and regretted it ever since. My SL5500, dead as a dodo, languishes in one of my drawers just incase I stumble upon a cure for it.

Oh dear.

Anyway, to rationalise these sad attachments; my Psion is for work and my Z is for play (and learning Linux).

Isn't there a netbook linux very much like pdaXrom?

I loved my Series 7, I hope the bugger who nicked it gets some illness in prison

I don't think it is as advanced (correct me please someone) and I suspect I would lose all the intuitive (one-click to do most things) response I love about it.

I got my netbook on ebay by the way, after two series 5 psions went because of the worn screen cable fault. Figure it gets them all in the end. Anyway, you might get a series 7 back that way.

It's too bad no one is developing and polishing the PalmOS emulator.  The ability to run basic Palm apps with good performance and lack of glitchiness would bridge the software gap on the Z quite nicely.

Could you imagine a similar device, same size as a C1000, with all the modern innards, colour screen, but a psion 5 style keyboard, would be awesome!

Omro,

To be perfectly honest, you are right! I do not need the money. It will be much less than what I paid for it. However, I do not want it to sit in a drawer when I can set it free so others can see what it can do.

I am going through some growing pains with the life drive. It has some bugs installing certain apps, runs somewhat slow - when opening programs, resets a few times, had to hard reset twice, exchanged my first one. But, I am very happy with it. It does just what I need it to do. I just purchased the Thinkoutside bluetooth keyboard and it is awesome!

So my Z will go on e-bay this weekend. I want to sell it rather than keep it because, I will look into buying the next Z if it has built in wireless, bluetooth & WIFI. Plus a nicer screen would seal the deal.

Am loving my C1000, so the likelihood of me getting rid of it any time soon is minimal, but when I do decide it's time is up, if at that time a C1000 is still being supported, I will be donating it to a developer. Perhaps you could do the same, if you truly won't get a decent sum of money for it? I won't blame you if you don't, because money is money is money!

Omro that sounds like the right thing to do. However, money is money, and what little I get of it back is going back to my credit card. Plus, my Z is in excellent conditoin. Just like new.
