Any Experience With Cf Video Out Devices?

Hi!

I have to give some presentations and rather than spend $1000 or more on a laptop I'd rather spend the $100 or so on the video out card for my zaurus. My presentations are all text-based, so I don't need any powerpoint-like software. Just good old vi and large fonts.

question is, does anyone have experience with these devices?
Do they really work as advertised?
Difficulty with drivers?
Are there any other brands or models out there that provide video-out?
Does it just send to video-out what's on the screen, or something else?
Any other comments or thoughts that I haven't thought of?

I wonder who has money to blow just to test this out>?  it would be a great companion for me take to school and plug it into a vga screen for presentation if it supports vga out.

I have the iodata card. It has a presentation software which allows you to do a slide presentation if you have your slides in jpeg format or something similar. There is also a program that will show whatever it's on the screen with a refresh every few seconds. Both modes work fine on either or my zauruses (Sharp ROM). The displayed screen is a bit small, you get the same resolution as the device, so it's a bit better on the C-series. It's not the same as a laptop but it works for basic purposes.

When showing JPEG files using the Presentation Application, are you limited to 640x480 images or you can show up to 1024x768 as iodata says it supports? If you are limited to 640x480 than what happens when an image exceeds the resolution? is it rescaled?

if you use the SHARP Presenter, the card will work in 640x480 and
800x600. Also it's possible to show XGA (1024x768) images, but
they're scaled down so the card output is SVGA (800x600).

Doing a presentation with the Zaurus is big fun. Connecting the Zaurus
to the beamer, stepping back and control the presentation with the
IR remote control (included with the card) is always an eye-popping
experience

I got one too - donated from a good user - it works but its not for fullscreen realtime usage. Sash has ported the drivers to the pdaXrom too. He is actually looking into if it could be hardware accelerated right now and also looking into SL6000 problems with the card.

The ultimate setup is this (and i tested it yesterday), using a Dell LCD with USB host builtin i setup the following:
Dell USB mouse and keyboard + connected the output to the screen - that way you got an entire "real" computer setupt - way fun to show off - although the screen speed doesn't make it 100% useable.

Marc, I have a couple of questions:
1. What is the Sharp Presenter? Is there a specific software that comes with a unit, comes with the card?

2. What models does this works with (I mean the 800x600 resolution). I have a SL-5500 and I am waiting for a SL-C3100, would this work on both?

3. Related question. The Hancom Powerpoint viewer is terrible to represent medium to complex presentations. The letters are illegible and all cluttered, I think the only presentations that would look well (and below 500K which is nothing) are the ones my Granma does. Is there a replacement for this, that could get more complex presentaitons and of bigger size?

Sorry for the third one, as it is not exactly related, but I've seen Trisoft as one of the Zaurus focal points of knowledge in this community.

the SHARP Presenter is preinstalled on SL-C700/750/760/860/1000/3000.
It's missing on the SL-C3100 (no idea why) but available for download here:

The card will work with every Zaurus (even the SL-5500). The resolution of the
Zaurus screen is not an issue here, because the image is copied on the card and
not displayed on the Zaurus itself.

Don't think about Powerpoint. If you use the IOData card, you'll be creating
simple slideshows. Don't even dream about movies / effects etc.
There's no way for more than 3-4 fps (and you can see how every new
picture is written in the card memory).

Split your presentation in single images and show them one by one. That's
the way it works with the card.

yes, that's absolutely right.

Let's try to explain it a bit better:
Please imagine the IOData card as a memory card.
You may copy pictures on it, but it takes a moment (same
as copying on a CF memory card).
The card displays it's memory (the copied picture).
This means: If there's one picture displayed and you switch
to the next picture, you're able to see how the new picture
is written from top to the bottom line.
Repeat: You really see how every single frame is written.

It's perfect for a slideshow presentation, but will never be
able to show animations / movies.
