Which One? Opie Or Oz
« on: May 22, 2005, 05:18:16 am »
Hey guys,

I'm a Linux Newbie, so I need some help on which OS to install on my Zaurus SL-5500.  For now, I want to be able to play movies like avi,mpg and play mp3s.  I'm also extremely new to computer programming, so gonna need some kind of C++ and Java compiler.  I think OPIE and OZ support all this. I'm not sure. Which would be best for me for now, since I'm transitioning from Windows to Linux.  I'm sorry to say this (coming from Microsoft's double clicking, next, next, finish. haha), but which one is easier to install? For the OZ I see something like the initrd and the zImage.bin
For the OPIE I keep seeing binary and the source code.  Do I just compile the code and put them in my CF and they will start working or there is more to it?

Thanks  for putting up with Newbies.

More precisely, OpenZaurus is the 'distro' and Opie and GPE are two different GUIs which are run on top of the same base system.

The zImage and initrd.bin are used to flash a new flash-image onto your Zaurus.

Choose from those here: http://www.openzaurus.org/official/unstabl.../sl5000,sl5500/

Follow the instructions here (to select the correct files, and to flash):

Opie-mediaplayer2 and/or mplayer will work to play mp3s/avis/etc. I'm not sure about java compilers as it's not something I ever do, but I do remember there being one around. There's a recent thread about getting native compiling working using OZ (which means Opie and GPE) in the forum.

If you are good at following instructions, and you have a decent sized SD card (128+) I suggest trying the Hentges images of openzaurus with cardfs.  It's a good shortcut to a fully working system with minimal effort.  The cardfs script will install a lot of apps you will want at the time of flashing.  The latest release candidate includes konqueror, a few cool games, and things like opie-ftp.  It is the same Openzaurus release as you will find in the OZ feed, but the cardfs script gives you a running start when installing applications.

See http://hentges.net/misc/openzaurus/oz3.5.3-opie1.2.0.shtml and read the cardfs instructions before flashing your Z.

Hi,

I have a question.
I've just bought a zaurus C1000, with Qtopia on it.
I want to flash ROM to OPIE.
I download bin on previous quoted URL:
[a href=\"http://hentges.net/misc/openzaurus/oz3.5.3-opie1.2.0.shtml]http://hentges.net/misc/openzaurus/oz3.5.3-opie1.2.0.shtml[/url]
but if i read installation guide, we need zImage and initrd.bin but there is no updater.sh file to download. Where can I find It or how can i flash my C1000 with only zImage and initrd.bin copied on CF root.

thanks

tom.

Try here: http://ewi546.ewi.utwente.nl/mirror/www.op....5.4-RC/sl1000/

Also note that it should be zImage.bin
