Loading New Os Onto Zaurus 3100 Questions
« on: December 10, 2005, 09:35:46 pm »
I just bought my new Zaurus SL-3100 from

http://www.geekstuff4u.com/product_info.ph...products_id=210

They got it here rather quickly and I'm mostly pleased with it, though it seems to run OpenPDA as the OS. I am hoping to load a different OS onto it so I can have the full control and power of linux. Though I am not certain whether I should go with Open Zaurus or try to install something like Debian.

http://pocketworkstation.org/

I only use Debian (and Ubuntu because its so similar).

Basically, I want to know what people think about the Open Zaurus OS versus running such things as debian on a handheld? What are the good points and what are the bad points?

To help, in addition to using the PDA for all regular purposes, I want to do the following if possible:

1) get a program that is good for reading manga
2) play videos - xvid/divx in ogm/mkv/avi
3) listen to music in mp3/ogg/mpc
4) read text files in a console-like application such as vi/vim

Would OpenZaurus or Debian suit me better for these?

I have no wireless card yet, but I plan to get one as soon as I figure out which models and numbers are good for the Z 3100.

IMHO, you can do that in the stock rom. Kino2 will take care of the multi-media stuff, vim or pico or nano is availiable for the stock rom. As for manga, unfamiliar with any apps that do this(doesnt mean there isnt any). if you like you can install pocketworkstation in chroot mode, I did(trying to get xfce4 to work with it), but icewm works(comes with it).

This would be a showstopper for pocketworkstation as it does not have any hardware video acceleration for c3100 (nor any other Z) ...
I guess OpenZaurus or pdaXrom would best fit your need (with a personal preference for pdaXrom)
SL-C3000 - pdaXrom 1.1.0Beta1
SL-C860 - pdaXrom 1.1.0 RC8 (charging circuitry dead :( )
CF RamStar 512 Mb / Hitachi 4Gb microdrive (thanks to creative's muvo² :p)
SD Sandisk 1Gb / Viking 256 Mb
Linksys WCF13 CF wifi card

Anyone willing to donate for my work, please consider donate to pdaXrom and/or OE/OZ projects instead, I wouldn't have been able to do anything without them ...

You could also just stick with the Sharp ROM which should be the default OS that came with your Zaurus and tinker with it to your hearts content. It can do all that you want to do and if manga is what you want then it propbably is the best choice since the Sharp ROM supports Japanese natively whereas other ROMs come in English and you need to hack Japanese support back in.
SL-C3000 - pdaXii13 build5.4.9 (based on pdaXrom beta3) / SL-C3100 - Sharp ROM 1.02 JP (heavily customised)
