Opie Apps on tkcROM / Sharp ROM?
« on: February 05, 2004, 04:32:41 am »
Hi

I am sorry that this is a totally newbie question ...

Can I use Opie apps on a Sharp ROM (or a Sharp-based ROM such as tkcROM)?  Do I just need to install libopie and away I go?  Or do I need OpenZaurus ROM to use them?

I\'m mainly interested in the PIM apps (eg addressbook, calendar etc).  Can they co-exist with the Sharp PIM apps?

Owen

Zaurus CL760
tkcROM

You really should search the forums a little before posting but as you are a newbie. You can get Opie apps compiled for the Zaurus rom here:

Thanks for this reply; but that wasn\'t quite my question.

I did search the forums, and I found where I could get Opie applications.  But what I couldn\'t find (and apologies if it is there but I didn\'t find it) was a clear statement of what will, and what will not, work on a Sharp ROM.

The opie pim apps will replace the original sharp pim apps.  I\'m using tkc and the opie pim.  The opie pim is way better. I haven\'t been sync\'ing with anything (I don\'t need to) but I like opie\'s pim cause it stores the data in XML format which can just be copied to another pc for backup.

Get the ipk\'s from the link in Richjn\'s post.  I\'ve tried to install the ipks from the oz site but haven\'t had any luck.  You\'ll need the libopie1 from the tkc feed.

Partly because they are in ar format.

There is no listing of what does and what doesn\'t work, partly because no-one who develops Opie uses a Zaurus with the Sharp ROM. Mickeyl was trying to get someone to take over the maintenance of the Opie-on-Sharp-ROM feed (I have a feeling that there\'s another one somewhere, not just the handhelds.org one). So if anyone wants to volunteer then contact him.

The feed Richjn pointed you to is a feed of opie apps compiled specifically for the Sharp ROM. If you use this feed to install the apps then they should work okay on a Sharp(-based) ROM.

If you get them from any other feed then they probably won\'t work (or at least they are less likely to).

Hello Owen,

since you asked for coexistence: The opie pims overwrite the sharp pims on my tkcrom but it\'s possible to cp the files before the install so you can get them back easily. Is also had to install the libopie(s) from protos tkc feed.

Regards

I\'m guessing that it is necessary to sync the opie pims with the older version of intellisync...just as if one were running OZ....correct?

If you can figure that out, then please post instructions.  I\'ve been working this out for awhile and still have no solution.

I am running Zynergy ROM (Sharp based) with both Sharp and OPIE PIMs installed.  The Z will sync via OEM software, but only the Sharp PIMs.  When I uninstall that ver of intellisync and try ver 1.43 then I get no connection at all.  The Z will try to connect until I cancel it, and from the desktop it times out on the \"Put the Z in the cradle and click on OK\" window.

I\'ve looked through the OZ forum and tried the hotplug fix, but I can\'t seem to make that work either.  It just does not seem to have a USB driver installed.  If I use the driver from the CD with the old intellisync I still have no luck.

Anyone smart out there figure this out?

I compiled the libopie, libopie2, etc for TKC off the TKC feed.  I specifically compiled these against the Sharp ROM libs so that Opie apps can run against a Sharp ROM.  I have not looked at the Opie Sharp feed, as I did this to get the latest and greatest code for the Sharp ROM.  But I can confirm for you that with the correct libs compiled against Sharp, it should be fine.  I have compiled many of the apps against Sharp and they are working very nicely.
