Hello, my first post here. Pardon me for putting this here, I didn't see any board for general discussion of ROMs.
OK, I have a C1000 "in the mail", starting from scratch with these Zaurii. I have some rather old Unix experience but nothing like Linux or these roms.
I did some searches but haven't yet got the full "big picture". My impression is that the "Sharp ROMS" are the original Sharp rom, and later developments that come from that like Cacko, tkcROM, etc? Is that because Sharp is no longer developing or do people just want to jazz it up some more?
And the rest of the ROMs, how are they related? And I wonder how these things are funded or are they all volunteer work? In other words how long are they going to be around?
I tend to prefer solid packages that have a future rather than flash or piles of useless features. I need a good browser (prefer Firefox but might look at Opera since lots here seem to like it). I don't do games. I need good useful PDA functions and calculators. I'd like to sync to a Windows box but a Knoppix-booted machine is possible, I guess. Or can I just backup to a USB drive? I need a spreadsheet that is a good emulator for Excel, that's very important. I don't listen to music on computers but might read a book or other documents (Word files, etc.) I don't do any presentations or that sort of thing. I'm just starting out with wireless and have no clue if I need Bluetooth or 802.11g or both, but I will want to use "Internet Cafes" and so forth.
Anyway, if anyone can point me in a good direction for a ROM, saving me a lot of work trying several of them, I will really appreciate it. Or even just a FAQ somewhere that discusses these basic selection questions.
