Switching to opie.
« on: February 19, 2004, 06:53:54 pm »
Is there a way in any of these Sharp or Sharp-based ROMS to get rid of Qtopia and put OPIE in its place?

Thanks.

Unless you create your own ROM you will not be able to get rid of the actual binaries, though you may be able to install Opie on top of the underlying components. May, but it would be hard work, you\'ll need to get the opie source and then compile it all against the libs which the Sharp ROM uses.

I would be more inclined to just flash OZ. In truth the underlying parts of the system behave much the same (except that OZ is more up to date) so you wouldn\'t gain anything from your plan (other than keeping the flash ROM non-writable).

I have done this to a certain extent.  This is how I got a later version of Wellenrieter to work on a Sharp type ROM (see TKC packages for these).  I have compiled many of the Opie apps and a majority of them appear to work.  So this is very doable (although it was a huge PITA).  There are a few Opie apps that seem to have dependencies on certain parts of QPE that do not seem to be available on the standard ROM.  Perhaps an upgrade of QPE/Qtopia may be in order to get some of these other apps to work.  I may look into this if I have more time and create a full Sharp compatible Opie.  But right now...time is teh critical factor.

I presumed that the question included replacing the Qtopia with the opie launcher and taskbar, etc., all on top of a Sharp ROM which I think may require some effort.
