Any Reason you need to stay with 3.5.3? I have been using the latest version of the hentges rom (based on 3.5.4.1) with the kernel from 3.5.4.2-rc2 and it works very well.

How did you do the kernel upgrade?

I'm using the 3.5.4.1-rc2-T2 Hentges ROM and I tried upgrading to the 3.5.4.2-rc2 kernel but it complained on bootup that it was expecting 3.5.4.2.  So I had to downgrade the kernel back to 3.5.4.1-rc2-T2.

You need to edit or remove /etc/init.d/checkversion

to remove that warning... 'before' you flash and boot a different kernel.

You should also install the 'matching' kernel modules for your new kernel.
