Okay Guys, I Got A Good Question For Ya!
« on: May 17, 2006, 03:01:47 am »
I been flashing the rom on and off and its been improving nicely but i read somewhere about not using the internal memory of the zbut on the microdrive itself.  If this is so, why not flash a full distro like debian or kde?  is it because the pda is too slow?  be great to have a laptop instead of a pda.

Im gona test out your latest builds also, where are the latest ones?  especially for the c-3200?

The idea of having a full-fledged distribution ona Zaurus sounds tempting, but ... it really doesn't work out. While having a stock install on a PDA may be pretty geeky, it's usability is very badly.

Stock distributions don't care about resource constraints, they don't know about touchscreens, display brightness, rotation, size, 64MB memory, 400 MHz speed etc. etc. etc.

Unless you just want to show off and don't want to actually work with your device, you can attempt to use a full fledged stock distro, but trust me - it isn't fun - not even for us geeks.

Pocketworkstation isn't as bad as all that, but then it isn't quite a full distro either--you have to use the x server from OZ or pdaX or gpe...or vnc.  There are people who do this. On the whole though, Mickeyl is right. The Z has pretty limited power and people (including me) seem generally happier with software optimized for it.  Along these lines, this is the reason for the popularity of 3rd party distros...they are far better optimized, and hence much more responsive than the stock sharprom.
