Store Opera On Sd For C3000
« on: April 19, 2006, 11:57:12 pm »
Hi, I'm interested to move opera to SD card to reduce the latency in microdrive startup's, I believe this will improve both the latency and power-saving. I have moved the opera and /home/QtPalmtop/opera to SD card on C3000. But the result seems to be unexpected.

Any other issues?

how about just installing opera from the qinstaller GUI and selecting SD as the destination?

I have extracted from the ipk, it looks identical to what I have done.
I wonder why the Opera 7.55 on C3K is slower than Opera 7.30 on my 5500. When I clicked on 5500, it will switch without any noticeable latency, but on C3K, you can notice the latency between your click and the switch. The differences are: 1) version difference 2)installation difference, on 5500 it's in a RAM partition, on C3k, it's on the microdrive or the SD.
Meanie: Have you noticed speedup when replaced your microdrive with CF?

well, response time is much better with a flash than a microdrive, but i dont really know about opera since i use netfront for simple stuff and firefox for the rest.

I use opera because it can open the evf.css evf.js to correctly search for a particular html file when i hit the search button for a drug in my prentice 2006 drug book.  firefox nor netfront can open them.  I really wish netfront could open the files because it would make my search faster and browsing quicker.  opera is a memory hog as well, i need to enable memory on sd most of the times.

In reality, i use both when i surf.  If one doesnt work, I try the other browser.  But what a pain!

Netfront seems to be useless to me, since it cannot handle Chinese (lots of boxed characters because of lack the encoding recognition). I have tried Meanie's firefox on top of xqt, it's slow and too heavyweight compared with Opera.
Originally with 5500, it's a pleasure to suspend and resume without any problems. But since last hdd1 error, I found Opera is problematic, it may try to store something or load something after the microdrive suspended, then the ext3 file system would complain something. Later it may cause problems to the whole partition. After I moved Opera to SD card, I noticed sometimes it causes problems to the SD too. Don't quite understand the problems well.

I wish I could ask some friend to hack my C3000 to a 256MB internal flash one or even larger!

I solved my opera crashes by creating a swap file on sd and enabling it.  Runs fine.  The only problem i have with it is that its slow.  I use a modified ipk i slapt together borrowing heavily on maslovsky's memory applet.

you nee to assign a chinese capable font to netfront by adding the following entry to netfront's pref file:
Code: [Select]
FontFamilyCn: simsun
assuming you have the simsun font installed, or specify any other chinese capable font you have

I have used that also, but I relied on the suspend/resume heavily. I will keep Opera running and then suspend it, after resume, sometimes I would notice kernel complaining. After moving Opera to SD, the complaining also would disable the SD access sometimes, which was very annoying.

Thank you very much, Meanie. I will have a try.

Update:
It doesn't work. After I adding the
FontFamilyCn: simsun
It will be removed after I run Netfront.
And Netfront itself doesn't have the Chinese encoding support.
In fact I have changed the FontFamilyEn to simsun already.

« Reply #11 on: July 12, 2006, 10:16:45 pm »
Yesterday, I have tried opera 7.30 on my friend's newly bought SL-7500C, it run quickly and if I suspend and resume, it won't cause any problem. The only difference is that it is in the machine's flash while mine is on microdrive or SD, which is considered to be external stuff. I believe this is the source of the unknown problem.

Any one knows how to solve the problem? Will it be cured by enabling the fast load? If I do something before suspend and after resume, it would cure too, but don't know how much work is needed.

Now I closed opera before suspend and re-opened it after resume.

Meanie: I have solved the netfront's problem. It will search for some fonts, if I named the font alphabetically before the helve*, then it will use it, and it will display Chinese. But it cannot handle all my interested sites correctly.
