Xqt2 Ported To Oz/opie
« on: May 12, 2006, 02:44:52 pm »
Here is Xqt2 (CVS version) ported to OpenZaurus OPIE.  You can now run all your X11 apps under Opie! Screenshot shows Abiword and Firefox running at the same time with Icewm window manager.

Bugfixes over xqt from feed:
- Gtk apps are now working fine under Opie
- Enter key and Ok key are working

Installation notes:
- ipkg install xqt2
- under console type: export DISPLAY=:0.0
- launch your favorite X11 app from the same command line
- to install X11 apps add the X11 feed to your /etc/ipkg.conf file

Enjoy

PS: hrw, could someone add the recipe to org.openembedded.x ?

Are you using apps from the OZ X feed?  Have you looked at meanie's stuff?  The whole X-apps tab in very nice, very handy.  Possibly adapting his scripts to OZ software (and maybe pocketworkstation)  seems like it would hold tremendous possibilities for an OZ-hybrid distro--qtopia with a best of X gtk app tab.

along those lines, there is a way to bring up qtopia stuff in an X setup (the name of it is obvious, but I need some sleep) analogous to xqt.  an oz setup that asks which main system (opie/X) you want on boot, and provides a tab/folder with the apps from the secondary system would be awfully flexible...and seems like it is getting feasible.

Yes I am using the X11 feed from OZ. I forgot to mention that when installing any GTK app you will need to install two missing dependencies:
- abiword depends on gdk-pixbuf-loader-png
- Every apps depending on pango depend also on: pango-module-basic-x + pango-module-basic-fc

I'll have a look at meanie's stuff when I have time.

I'd like to ask why you would want to use X/Qt under Opie, when you have the possibility of running GPE alongside Opie at the same time, as per this guide? It's very fast and definitely much more stable and responsive than X/Qt I think.

What's the benefit?

Umh, I did not realise Xfbdev would launch directly under Opie! I don't like much Gpe environment, so I guess I just have to find out how to make custom Xinit scripts and load a lighter WM then add a few shorcuts in Opie. And maybe allow to switch from one to another.

PS: yes it seems to run faster and smoothier than Xqt!

Thanks.

Hey, thanks for the info - looks interesting...

I tried it, but when I run abiword from the console, after a few seconds I get the prompt back, and that is all - do I need to switch VTs or do anything else??

Regards
