PROPOSAL: Separate forum topic for 5600
« on: March 02, 2004, 09:41:48 am »
I\'ve had my SL-5600 for several months now, and it seems that in terms of software, the 5600 is the \"forsaken middle child\" of the Zaurii.  It seems that most of the development of software has taken place on the 5000 and 5500, and now its going to the 7xx (and I\'m sure the 6000 once its available).  If you own a 5600, you are limited in regards to what ROMS and software are compatible.   Some things work, some things only work with some weird work around (that usually kills something else), and some things just don\'t work.

Therefore, I would like to suggest that a new forum be created just for discussion of 5600, instead of lumping it under the \"Everything 5x00\" topic.  Then all of us 5600 owners can get together and complain about how we\'d like to trade in our units for a 5500, if only we didn\'t have to give up the memory, CPU, better battery life and sound.

Well, I don\'t see how going off into your own SL-5600 specific forum will help the situation.  You just need to get all the SL-5500 owners to upgrade to the 3.10/3.13 ROM (like I have), then we will all be on the same page.

My experience is that the ROMS are not 100% compatible.  And then what if you are a 5600 owner who doesn\'t want to use the Sharp ROM?

Perhaps you have to be a 5600 owner to see the unique set of problems that it poses.

I don\'t think a 5600-specific forum would replace the general 5x00 forum for 5600 owners--since many, but not all, 5000/5500-centric software, configurations, tips, etc transliterate directly to the 5600 and work just fine.  The 5600 crowd couldn\'t ever really abandon the more general forums, but it would be nice to have a dedicated venue to exchange helpful hints like \"Whatever you do, don\'t try really_cool_for_5500_0.1_arm.ipk!  It\'ll melt your 5600!\"

Well said.  This is actually what I meant to propose.

I kinda agree... sometimes I look for clues in people\'s signatures to figure out if the fixes/mods/etc they propose are for the 5500 or 5600.

Off topic, but I think everyone should be forced to have a sig which tells everyone what they are running (succinctly though ;-))

I definately agree with the sig suggestion.

As far as the forum, well while I like the idea of being able to concentrate on one forum for answer searching, I do worry that we 5600 owners might miss out on the helpful suggestions/ experiences posted by the more venerable 5000 and 5500 owners.
