Edited qpe.sh and onreboot my C860 is stuck on blank screen
« on: March 09, 2004, 04:51:48 am »
HELP !!!
I edited \"qpe.sh\" to add extra environment variables and now my C860 will not start on reboot. I get the \"sharp\" splash screen and then a blank screen with a white box in the left hand corner. I do not get the Zaurus splash screen.  I\'m using the sharp ROM 1.10 JP.  It have a copy of \"qpe.sh\" on CF.
I have trawled the Forums but found no information.
How do I revert to my original \"qpe.sh\" ?

I can\'t imagine that editing qpe.sh would do this, perhaps throw you to the terminal and complain that it can\'t start Qtopia but this sounds a little extreme.

Is it possible to get to a terminal (ie not try to start up qtopia) like it is with the 5500?

It\'s very easy to screw qpe.sh up and if you do then qtopia wont boot nad you can\'t do anything with your Z till you fix it!

You have 2 options

1) Easy option - reflash ROM or use the Erase (format) option to return your Z back to factory settings.
Remove battery, replace battery and power on while holding OK key.
Choose 3rd option to reformat filesystem or 4th option to flash new rom. NOTE this will erase any settings you hace configured

2) Harder Option - boot into single mode, mount the mtdblock device containing qpe.sh and copy the backup qpe.sh.
The hard part is booting into single user mode. Remove battery and ac adapter, wait about a minute, replace battery and while holding down D and B keys switch the battery lock to locked position. If the zaurus doesn\'t boot to console mode after about 15 secs try hitting the power button while keeping the D and B keys depressed. If it boots normally - repeat above procedure till lyou get console mode. This generally takes me 3 or 4 tries till I get single user mode. You then have to mount the /dev/mtdblock1 or /dev/mtdblock2 devices (mount -t jffs2 /dev/mtdblock1 /mnt/tmp). From memory /dev/mtdblock1 is the / filesytem while /dev/mtdblock2 is the /home filesystem, you probably want the /dev/mtdblock2 system.
WARNING you can screw up the filesystem here if you aren\'t sure of linux commands - if you are worried then you are better off using the first option.

Is there any way I can backup the current config from the service menus ?
If I restore to factory settings does the language revert to Japanes ?
All help appreciated.

You said you have a copy of the old one. Follow Stubear\'s instructions and copy the old file from the cf card.

THe only way I\'m aware of is to create a NAND backup, but I still don\'t know how to extract data correctly from a NAND backup (anyone???) I\'m trying at the moment but some of the filesystem is missing and other parts are corrupted. Hopefully I can work it out as I have 3 months of emails and financial data on a fscked NAND backup that I cant boot from (deleted /sbin/ - dont ask how, you dont want to know) and mistakenly deleted my backups along with my wifes XP partition (bab bad weekend that one)

That will depend on what rom you are using, if you are using the Cacko ROM or tkcROM then you will probably be left in English, otherwise I think the other roms are anglasized sharp roms that return to Japanese.

I managed to login as a single user using the \"D + B\" key combo and to my suprise I was running the embedded console so  I just navigated to the /mnt/cf directory and restored the \"qpe.sh\" file. What a palaver !!!!
What\'s the best way to set up environment variables other than editing \"qpe.sh\" ?
