how 2 backup data stored on CF?
« on: October 07, 2003, 01:46:06 pm »
Does anyone know how to backup data from CF (or SD) to PC, using the backup/restore application for windows which comes with the SL5600?
This tool apparantly backs up only files under /home on the internal flash, but nothing which is stored on the CF.

Any suggestion is much appreciated.

I have two ways on backing up my files from my CF/SD card to my PC and I don\'t usually use the backup/restore application.
1. FTP.
2. CF/SD  card reader/writer.
SL-5500 Sharp ROM 3.10
Linksys CF-Card 802.11b, 256 SD-Card.

Hi,

I do the follow to make a FULL Backup of my Zaurus...

1.- Make an TGZ file from the SD
      a) Run the terminal or shutdown opie
       put a formated clean CF
      c) cd /
      d) tar -zcvf /mnt/cf/sdcontents.tgz /mnt/card

2.- Make a backup of the CF (if you have a PCMCIA Laptop and CF-]PCMCIA adapter
      a) Put the CF on the adapter
Put the CF on the PCMCIA slot
c.1) If you have a linux box issue the follow command (change the cfdevice with your device name, on my laptop is hdc
c.2) If you have a windows box download a tar.exe command from cygwin or other port and issue the follow comand (change the cfdevice with your devicename, on my laptop G:)
         tar -zvxf C:RESPLADOScfcontents.tgz G:

         tar -zcvf $HOME/cfcontents.tgz /mnt/cfdevice

Afther this you will have a sdcontents.tgz and cfcontents.tgz

3.- For the INITRD.BIN (Flash contents) issue the follow steps:
      a) Run the terminal or shutdown opie
       put a formated clean CF
      c) cd /
d.1) dd if=/dev/mtdblock1 of=/mnt/cf/initrd.bin (if you have Sharp ROM)
d.2) dd if=/dev/mtdblock4 of=/mnt/cf/initrd.bin (if you have OpenZaurus ROM)

Use this initrd.bin to restore the Flash contents
Use the .tgz files to restore the SD or CF

      Just my $0.02
