Nokia N770 Alternate Os's
« on: November 08, 2007, 03:16:26 pm »
I did some google searches today and found out there was an experimental build of Poky for N800.  Then, came across the link to http://pokylinux.org/autobuild/poky/ that has some 770 files (however seemingly no kernel, or .bin for that matter).

I'll admit, I know nothing other then what I read (which is limited by what I can find it seems), but I'd like to give it or other alternatives a try.  I have Hackers on it now, which runs ok when it runs.  I know there seems to be a lot more support for the n800 but with the price drop a few months back there should be a decent user base for the classic 770.

Anyone else do any dabbling or should I just kick the 770 to the curb and pick up a n800 for xmas?

OpenEmbedded can build Angstrom images for the Nokia770 where a lot of things work. It just needs a bit of love.

I recently bought an N770 and I quite like it, it fulfils its purpose quite well. Without a keyboard, I'm not too sure how well any other user interface would work on it though.  Am not sure what would be gained by switching - in fact, I think it'd be quite interesting to run the Nokia Tablet's software on the Zaurus!

Angstrom, or any other rom, is probably not going to happen since the 770, N800, and upcoming N810 all have closed wifi drivers. Imagine an internet tablet that cannot connect to the internet! However, KDE is able to be installed on top of the preexisting rom.

Firstly: It isn't Read Only Memory, but a distribution, secondly: OpenEmbedded has some magic to rebuild the wifi driver, so wifi works on the 770, 800 and 810 in angstrom.

Thanks for the confirmation on wifi before I spent too much time only to be disappointed.
