Re: Programs on the Zaurus

Hi, i am hopefully going to decide and buy a c860 by the end of the week, but i\'m getting a little confused.

Can you in fact download general sources from the internet and compile the application directly on the Zaurus. I realise that this probably needs an X11 ROM? Basically the idea is, i used to use linux on a 200mmx laptop and i want to treat the c860 the same. I\'m not running linux on my desktop machine at the moment and i don\'t need to...

So is this support in the X11 rom, can i install it? I understand that the X11 rom is based on debian, so can it be installed and treated as a full linux distro?

Also can you back up the C860 ROM immediately when i get it? Can you install PDaxrom onto a SD card or CF and not inferere with Qtopia? I\'ve been reading loads, but it seems a little vague on instructions about this... Why is Cacko 1.21 realised but the website is not updated?

Is it possible to convert all X11 Debians files (*.deb) to the arm format (i think i saw a utility around) and run these on the Zaurus immediately? Does this utility run on the zaurus?
Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.

you might want to post this question on the pdaxrom forum.  You will nodoubt get a quicker response
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

Yes and no. You can generally download source code from the \'net, and you can compile it on any ROM - GCC is command line so it doens\'t matter whether you\'re using X11 or Qtopia/Opie on the framebuffer.

What do you mean by this?

Yes - NAND backup, but you\'ll need a card to backup onto.

No, but you can go the other way and install Xqt to run X apps within Qtopia.

Yes and I imagine so (as the utility is only a script which uses ar, tar and gzip), the OZ version of ipkg can install .debs by default.
