Sandisk 256mb SD Corrupt
« on: October 14, 2003, 03:10:17 pm »
Hi all,

It seems like my Sandisk 256mb SD is corrupt, as sometimes while listening to mp3\'s the media player just hangs to the point where I have to take out the battery to reboot.  I tried copying files from the SD to desktop via SCP and it also reported \"could not read file\".  So my guess now is that parts of the SD are corrupt (I can listen to some of my mp3\'s without problem).

I was wondering what to do:  should I reformat the card (the SD/CF FAQ mentioned the card getting corrupt after formatting SD\'s...) or should I try to get a new one from Sandisk?

Any help greatly appreciated!
steven

I read this great article in the LINUX JOURNAL (Jan 03), who test drove the 5500. What he stated is that SanDisk cards are prone to failure. The real problem is SD drivers can never be free software because of the copy-restriction system, suggesting that u pick up a MMC card. He further stated that SHARP had to release a new driver to fix some of the problems for the 128MB SanDisk cards that would fail after repartitioning or work only once.
I have been running the IBM microdrive, as well as the MMC, with no problems.
Cheers!

Thanks for the reply!  I ended up formatting the card to ext2 and it seems to be working fine for the time being.  If I purchase future cards, though, I\'ll be sure to keep your info in mind.

I hope I can get this fixed.

While hoping to try the Cacko ROM, I tried to reformat my SanDisk 256MB SD card and now I have a $70 postage stamp. Since I tried to format it to EXT2, no device I have can reformat it back to anything usable.  I\'ve tried my Mac, PC, Zaurus, camera, a Palm M Series, all with no luck.  My Z won\'t mount it or recognize it (even in the terminal).  The PC doesn\'t see it at all, and my Mac sees it but won\'t format it.

Any suggestions?

If you have a windows PC and a card reader, you can try to format the card via the command prompt (as windows doesn\'t recognize ext2 as a valid filesystem).  try this:

format e: /FS:fat

note:  swap e: for whatever drive your PC recognized the media to be.

If that doesn\'t work, then is sounds like you may need to send it back to the manufacturer or place you purchased it.

best of luck!

Hi offroadgeek,

Thanks for the reply.  I tried this and got this:

format f: /fs:fat
(Insert new disk, blah blah, blah)
Error in IOCTL call.

I also tried it without the \"/fs:fat,\" but no dice.

Any ideas what that error is?  I\'m a Mac guy, so my DOS is rusty.  Thanks for the help.

check you syntax...

I think you need to have caps with /FS:fat...

you can always do \"format /?\" (without quotes) to check exact syntax...
