New C860! Flashing options?
« on: June 13, 2004, 08:39:46 pm »
Hey everybody.

My C860 just got here and is charging(what a screen!)... I\'d love to try out pdaXrom but I don\'t have a SD or CF card yet, so is there any way to flash it from USB?  There seems to be an option for it in the service menu, but I haven\'t seen any explanations of how that works.

Thanks.

Man, just sit tight and wait until you get a CF or SD card.

You DO NOT want to the the first (and only) guy to wax his spiffy 860 because he was in too much of a hurry to flash it (via USB that is, several others have already messed theirs up the good old fashioned way).

After all, don\'t you have a 24 hour Walmart where you can get a 256M CF card

And apparently you ought to backup your NAND first in case of disaster. Since you don\'t want to have one of these experiences:

Yes, definatly get yourself a Compact Flash card first. And maybe a CF reader for your desktop/laptop too, incase something goes wrong while flashing and you need to get a different ROM.

SD works for flashing, right?

I\'m gonna be using a bluetooth CF card, so I plan to use SD for storage...

I heard CF is better for flashing etc. but SD cards are probably good for memory.
P.S. for flashing, you need at least 250MB I think!

Yup, SD will work. And I use my SD for storage as well, which frees up my CF for things like a Wi-Fi card. I still use the CF for \"transporting\" any new ROMs or other goodies (that way I don\'t clutter up my SD).

So getting a CF card is still a good idea. But if you don\'t mind sharing your SD with ROMs and such then the SD card will work fine.

The NAND for the C760 and C860 are 131 MB from memory (basically all the 128MB flash plus a bunch of \"filler\" pages - probably checksums or something) I posted a ripper program previously that will strip of the extra stuff and leave you with just a jffs2 image 128Mb in size.
