Wikipedia for zBEDic
« on: June 18, 2004, 09:35:26 am »
Hi there,

I have just converted the wikipedia dumps (wikipedia.org) for the Zaurus.

Just use zBedic to display the *.dic.dz files.

Grab zBEDic here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/bedic
Grab my .dic.dz-files here: http://chrisg.crispy-cow.de/zaurus/

I\'m just running this with a SL5500G with OpenZaurus 3.3.5 and zBEDic 0.9.1-1.

I know, it\'s not actually a software, but might also be useful

I was really happy to see that I can have the Wikipedia on my Zaurus. I had the Tome Raider version on my Pocket PC and used it a lot.

The only thing I wish was that zBedik had more keyboard shortcuts. Still great though, I love having access to all that information all the time.

Thanks for doing it.

Cheers!

dh,

what shortcuts for example would you like to see? i would probably not add them as I don\'t do much Zaurus development anymore, but just curious...

I don\'t know about shortcuts but I would love to have links where possible
(ie. all words in the article you are currently reading that are wikipedia topics themselves
coulld be highlihted in the article so you can quickly jump to read about those topics - and of course
have a \'back\' button to quickly return to the original article). Not having this is the
main reason why for me wikistaticz approach may be a better way to use wikipedia on z (and also if you have enough space you can store images etc). Unfortunatelly the
scripts and process I found on some web page outlining this process did not work for
me (so I\'m thrilled to now at least have the zBEDic option).

The words within the current article _are_ highlighted and if you click on them you go to their article. At least in my version of wikipedia dictionary file (which I cannot use on my Z because I don\'t have CF card big enough

The \'back\' button doesn\'t make too much sense for normal dictionary files. zbedic is a dictionary reader, not a browser -- using wikipedia is a hack.

The words are definitely not highlighted in mine (I have c860 with Cacko 1.21B) and zbedic 0.9.1-1. Are there some options you need to set to turn this on?

In terms of \'back\' button you are right (and there is also a history list you can pull up
to return to previous selections).

Well, I guess the cross links are stored as a HTML-link in the articles itself. ZBEDic can display HTML content (like tables for example), but I guess it does not handle the <a href=...> tags.

I have a modified version of wiki2bedic.pl that obviously didn\'t get much distribution. I already forgot what did I fixed, I remember that I might broke something for the non-english versions of wikipedia.

Anyway, you can get my script at http://68.36.169.182/zaurus/zbdic

I greatly appeciate having the Zbedic format conversion of the Wikipedia dump. I had to reinstall Zbedic in order to use it. I wish that there was a EPWING format of Wikipedia that I could use with Zten....
