jp/us version of Zaurus?
« on: January 03, 2004, 12:03:48 pm »
I am thinking of getting a Zaurus, but have these problems:
1. is it possible to have an English user interface on jp-version Zaurus?
2. How is PalmOS app support? I saw in the FAQ that there is an emulator, but are there any limitations on PalmOS version support?
3. How is chinese support (input and output-wise).
4. Are Zaurus durable? I have heard of screen-cracks etc for other palm devices...

Thanks in advance.

Got my C860 for 2 weeks.  My impression is that this beast is really a bigger PDA and a smaller laptop.  Back to your questions:

1. Yes, most icons/menus may be converted to English.
2. Have not tried this yet but I remember the support is currently up to OS3 or something.
3. You may get a free soft keyboard installed with Changjei, Phonetic, Boshiamy (?) input methods.  There is no handwritting recognition out there.
4. I have seen in one forum talking about someone dropping an 5600 from the top of the roof (the guy was doing some works for his house) without serious damage.  And the unit is still working properly.  The clamshell design of the Cxx0 serious actually protects the screens from direct hit like most of today\'s PDAs.  In anyway if you treat it well I think the durability would not be an issue.

Regarding Chinses Input/Output, Zaurus is \"Unicode compilance\".

For output, all you need is the proper fonts, try the efonts from http://zaurus.cis92.net/.  Search the forums there on installation guide.

As for input, I mainly need Chinese input for some names and addresses in the address book only.  So I simply use the built-in (very good) CRIM handwriting recognition input.  Although the underlying character code is Japanese, the correct characters are all I need.  For true Chinese inputs, I suggest you search the forums of the above site.

Or you can try some English ROMs which will localize your Z into complete English.  However, it will also remove the Japanese (such as Japanese input, dictionary, ...).

You can find the rom in the download sections.

I\'m using Sash (Cacko) rom with Chinese fonts from zaurus.cis92.net and ckeyboard.  It is not as user-friendly as Palm CJKOS or PalmDragon but still manageable.
