Keyboards verified working w/ IRK driver?
« on: August 21, 2004, 03:58:16 pm »
Hello, on my quest to choose a wireless keyboard for my SL5500 I would like to know if the keyboards I found @ eBay are compatible with the driver our friend cwaig developed some months ago. The keyboards are:

-Pocketop (I think it works best?)
-Saitek Wireless
-Palm Wireless
-Micro Innovations (same as pocketop?)

Can you ppl share any success stories with the aforementioned keyboards?

Thanks!

Hi,

I used the Pockettop keyboard with the irk driver.  It worked brilliantly with the Zaurus SL-5500.  I created my book Z4CK (Check out http://www.z4ck.org) whilst on the train on the way to work each day.   Why not take a look at the book, the first half of Z4CK is free to download!  The rest is £2 in PDF format.

Hope this is helpful.

Cheers,

Kev

As I understand it, the Micro Innovations keyboard is the same thing as the Pocketop, but distributed by MI.  I used it with good success on the SL-5500.  I currently use the Palm IR keyboard with IRK 0.10.1.  It works very well... I like it better than the Pocketop (though it is marginally bigger and uses 2 AAAs instead of only 1) because it has a "real" / key and the keys feel more like a real laptop.  BTW, I don't know if Craig has merged the 0.10.1 code into the main IRK codeline yet.  The driver should be on his website, once it's back up.

I have the Kensington universal keyboard and it works fine with my 860.
Is it the model for PC you're referring to (coz I don't know any PDA keyboards made by K)?  It would be a very cool idea to have Z connected to PC keyboard via IRK.  Thanks a lot.

I'm using the Targus Universal Keyboard with a Zaurus 5500 running 3.10 ROM. Works great. Has a neat little arm with mounted infrared  that bends next to the Z's IR port. No mirrors to fiddle with (unlike the Pockettop keyboard).

Pockettop Keyboard also works with the Z. I had one originally, and ended up giving it to my siter with her Dell Axim.  Never had consistent luck getting the infrared to reflect properly to the Z's infrared port and the keyboard tended to slilp when I typed. The Targus keyboard holds the Z in a cradle with the infrared ports next to each other.

I've used it successfully to take notes in meetings, edit docs on flights, and write email. Great way to impress clients.

The saitek doesn't work with any OS above 2002.
It's not a driver problem but the keyboards firmware needs updating.  Which is next to impossible.
