6000 Won't Turn On
« on: November 27, 2004, 08:27:32 pm »
I find that my SL-6000 is constantly becoming frozen in an off state. I let it sit, and it enters into the suspend mode forever. I can't turn it on as it is, and I can't turn it on after hitting the reset button. The display just stays blank. I've seen it happen so far using an OpenZaurus ROM and the Stock Sharp ROM. It affects the maintenance menu that you get to by holding the OKAY key by not showing up. I can however enter into the diagnostics menu by holding the D and P keys while resetting.

In the end I can reflash a copy of the stock Sharp ROM, and in most cases I will be back up in running on the first try.

I wonder if anyone else has seen this problem, and might know what I could be doing to cause it? Could data be becoming corrupts, or maybe the battery dies prematurely and causes some damage? It seems to happen many hours before the battery should die when it was fully charged and in a suspended state.

I know I've read quit a few posts on how to revive the PDA when things go wrong, and that seems to be pretty straightforward. What kills the PDA though when the most that's done to it is just left it alone? I am strongly suspecting that it is the battery running dry that is causing the problems, does this happen to anybody else when their batteries die?

I don't know what I did so reflashing didn't erase the entire internal memory, but after removing all the files on my SD card, and copying over the files again it seems to have produced a much different result.  I don't see any of the old programs still on the tabs, and the Java programs have come back this time.

Corrupt files may have been one of the many problems causing my PDA to crash.   Should have checked all the MD5 sums before posting, hopefully it will be more stable now.

I determined what was happening. When the Zaurus was left until the battery ran too low to function it would shut off. Hitting the power button does nothing, even if you plug in power from the wall. Not booting, and still able to get into the debug menus doesn't mean it's broken, just needed to charge more before it would attempt it. Those many times reflashing could have been avoided by just charging the unit up a little longer.

This is typical of several devices using Li-Ion batteries. My Samsung cell phone operates the same way. I believe it depends on the fact that if you drain the battery completely the first charge period will require a lot of current. It has to be some sort of "protection" mechamism to avoid excessive current sink or heat if you have both the battery charging and the device operating.

With my SL-6000L I have to wait about 10 minutes before I can turn it on after I start charging it if I discharge the battery to the point that it shuts-off.
