How To Read Yahoo! Mail
« on: December 15, 2004, 02:52:19 pm »
I have Opera 7.25. Well, actually it came with the Z. I can't use the Yahoo! Mail buttons and links for for 'Delete', 'Check All', 'Compose', etc. Javascript is turned on.

A poster suggested installing v 7.30, but I can't find a package (ipk?) for the 6k. I couldn't find packages for other browsers either. I don't know if I want to go to another ROM, since that seems to be too much surgery to be able to just read email, not that I understand ipks, ROMs, etc. anyway.

All suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

It seems to work fine on the 860 with whatever version of netfront that has. Actually I'm not sure if I sent am email yet, I can read them ok.

Also, despite what others said about pop access requiring an upgrade (money), I cannot find this mentioned on their web site and I just got a reply from yahoo in which they seem to wish to diagnose the problem. I did find comment on the web about how they had switched off this from their free service a couple of years ago, so it is rather curious and I am not particularly optimistic, but I will give them the chance to explain it all.

I have a C750 with both Netfront and Opera and indeed Opera doest work well with Yahoo.i.e. you cant hit the delete and other buttons and expect some action.

But Netfront handles it all to well and I have composed email on Yahoo on my C750 with Netfront.

Dont know about the higher version Oepra though...

Try using http://wap.yahoo.com it's a smaller page for embedded devices and works well for accessing your web email.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the replies. I must say however that I'm as much in the dark as I was before I asked. I know now there is a browser out there called Netfront, but I've no idea how to get it. The Access web-site (makers of Netfront, apparently) have no download for the Zaurus. Will one for ARM work? Will it work with the original ROM? I searched this site's download, software index, and feed links, and didn't find Netfront there. The so-called beginner's (getting started) FAQs are off-topic on the basics, so I'm in the dark as to how and what software to install.

Following the Amazon fiasco, I bought a PocketPC for my brother, and he's happily surfing doing all sorts of things, whereas I'm stuck with my Zaurus with no clue. And I'm sorry to say this site is unhelpful from a newbie perspective. I envisioned wirting  a real "Getting Started FAQ" explaining the big picture down to the tools, but I just can find enough information to use my Z myself to begin with.

I look back on my experiences successively as system administrator, developer, and business user of Debian, and I know it's not me. And it's not a fault of this site, because it is free of charge, and volunteer.

But it is obvious why Sharp doesn't want to sell to non-business users.

Opera 7.30 is available here on the zug downloads.
Opera 7.55 is available on Yahoo "SL5500" Group (I'm using this now).
The Yahoo email buttons all work fine with these versions, but they did not work with Opera 6.
These are for SL5500, so I don't know if they will work on 6K or not.

Thanks Doug, Opera 7.55 for the 5500 works fine on the 6k. The icons are small, but that's more screen real estate for the web page... the only thing I've so far seen it mess up are groups.google.com frames pages.

There is a fix for the icons here on the zug downloads page.
This is for c-series zaurus, but it might work on yours since opera for 5500 did.
