CF modem or Wifi (Z5600)
« on: January 05, 2004, 05:52:17 pm »
Just got my 5600, want simple accessory to connect to internet (Earthlink). It seems wifi is very limited geographically, even tho it is growing. So I\'m inclined to stay wired, via a CF modem and land line. I\'m not highly computer-inclined so it better be simple and work right out of the box.

Any comments or advice?

Well, I don\'t know how well linux connects with earthlink via dialup.  THat\'s the first thing I\'d be worried about.  You need to see if they support ppp connections (a.k.a. \'dun\' connections)

Assuming that you CAN connect to earthlink that way, it\'s a matter of where you will be using it.  you need to check into what\'s available in your area for WiFi and how often you will be able to plug into a phone line.  WiFi will give you a much faster connection.  So if you can afford an account with T-mobile hotspot service, you may be happier, but it\'s a lot of money and I don\'t know how many hotspots are in your area.  THere\'s only 1 t-mobile hotsport within 30 miles of my house and only 1 public spot.

The other possible option, if your cell phone supports it, is to use your cell ohne as a modem and dial up earthlink that way, of course, you still have to worry about weather or not they support that kind of connection though.
