I'm trying to install Minimo on my Zaurus SL-5500 with OZ GPE 3.5.1 (3.5.2 had issues/problems in the GPE image).  It's dependency hell even when I try installing the .ipks for its dependencies.  I'm getting errors.  Also the package manager's GUI broke on me (it won't launch any more).  I'm using the 32, 32 zImage...  I'm also running ipkg as Root since that seems to get me better/more results.  What should I do?

You say "I'm also running ipkg as Root", this is the easiest way to do it - from the command line (unless you've installed aqpkg instead of the default package manager).

Do you have a local feed setup? Or can you have your Z connected to the 'net? It makes the so called 'dependency hell' much easier (as the dependencies are automagically installed).

P.S. What was the problem with the 3.5.2 rom? Also what errors are you getting, etc.?

My Z is net connected...  The problem with 3.5.2 is with the GPE image whenever I turn the PDA off it won't turn on again unless I reset it via the replace battery switch...  The errors are usually I need another package installed...  I have a Linksys WCF12 and a wifi network...  I tried installing Minimo using wifi, Familiar feed, and OpenZaurus 3.5.1 unstable feed...  It's taking hours literally and my terminal process on my SL-5500 appears to have frozen...  What should I do?

I've also tried the GPE image from Open Zaurus. I prefer the look of GPE being a gnome man, and don't really need the Zaurus for Sysadmin so the lack of "tools" doesn't bother me that much. However, I couldn't install anything on GPE, although I admit I didn't try for very long after discovering CoreDump's excellent (Opie) SD card image. The GPE image is not really usable yet according to the Wiki;

gpe-image

    * gpe-package isn't really usable at the moment.
    * Auto shut-off/screen dimming isn't working yet.
    * Not all gpe-conf sub-applications are Zaurus-friendly yet.
    * If gpe-nmf crashes when you try to play a file, run 'gst-register' from the terminal - This should fix it.
    * Could do with a 'start menu' suspend command (not too important)
    * 'Start menu' suspend function (it is there on mine!) hangs system
    * System is not suspended automatically on battery, despite "Light & Power" settings
    * after VNC installation, /etc/init.d/fbvncinput references a nonexistent group (and fails) - change root.input to root.root
    * must run ldconfig after restart
    * Can't login after having changed owner information - Must re-flash
    * Console (rxvt) closes sometimes (example: ls /etc/init.d), but not in Landscape mode. https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...?showtopic=7059 has details.
    * At the first boot following the flash process a picture is displayed for quite a long time. There's no progress bar nor activity indicator. Don't reboot, just wait: it's normal.
    * If using rxvt, and opening and then closing on-screen keyboard, closes the terminal

My own personal advice is to install the hentges flavour Opie, and then follow the instructions for installing Opera on this forum. I am eager to see GPE become more usable, unfortunately I am not technically proficient enough to do anything to speed that up!

Strangely my 5500 worked with GPE in one of the 3.5.x forms. I used the hardware button to suspend without troubles. I posted a question about this. Try a seach for 'snooze'.

The only feed you can use is the one which is in the same place as you got the rom images (due to the use of soft-float), there are mirrors of the latest roms & feed as the oz site is terribly slow.

ipkg should fetch and install the dependencies automatically, it may be that the slow connection makes it look like it's locked up...?

I'd alter the feed locations in /etc/ipkg.conf (lines starting with src) to point to CoreDump's mirror (which is nice and fast), then run 'ipkg update' to update the available file lists, then 'ipkg install minimo' and see what happens.

What's the URL of CoreDump's mirror?  Btw, now I'm also getting error messages saying IPKG backend failure, cannot continue when I try to update the package list in GPE Package.

from experience on my 6000, the ipkg backend failure seems to happen when the gpe packagemanager is asked to load too many ipks---especially in the case of a large nuber of dependencies it just goes belly up.... try from command line something that killed the gui package manager...

There's a txt file called mirrors.txt in the root directory of the current OZ release on OZ.org. It gives the mirror addresses.

Update: when I try to to run ipkg install minimo I get An error occurred, return value: 22.  Whenever I try to run ipkg update I get Downloading http://familiar.handhelds.org/familiar/rel...rmv4l//Packages, carrage return: ipkg: unable to open `/usr/lib/ipkg/lists/armv4l`: No space left on devicefile_copy: ERROR: failed to copy /tmp/ipkg-0f0eb4/Packages to /usr/lib/ipkg/lists/armv4l, carrage return: Downloading http://www.openzaurus.com/offical/unstable.../feed//Packages, carrage return: wget: server returned error 404: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found, carrage return: ipkg_download: ERROR: Command failed with return value 1: `wget --passiv-ftp    -q -P /tmp/ipkg-0f9eb4 http://www.openzaurus.cAn error ocurred, return value: 2.  I've also tried editing /etc/ipkg.conf as Root, but I keep getting errors again about not enough space being free even though I've checked and there is plenty of memory free.
