Host Name Lookup Failure
« on: January 29, 2005, 10:33:39 am »
I have set up ppp over usb automagically in Settings/Network and it works fine. I can ping websites by name.

I am trying to set up ppp over irda but cannot do dns lookups. I can ping websites by ip address but not by name.

My isp is uklinux.net. I get two dns ip addresses from 'usepeerdns' which are added to /etc/ppp/resolv.conf
I have tried a symbolic link from /etc/resolv.conf to /etc/ppp/resolv.conf and I have tried adding the dns addresses to /etc/resolv.conf manually - neither has worked.

I can ping the dns servers.    The ping is over 1000ms however.

nslookup google.com dnsipaddress returns with:
*** Unknown host

(From XP nslookup google.com dnsipaddress works and the ping is OK too.)

ping google.com returns with:
Host name lookup failure

As a temporary fix I tried adding my pop and smtp ip addresses to hosts but Mail just hangs - it still works over usb though.

Does anyone have any ideas about where I should look next?
I would really like to get my email on the move with my Zaurus.

TIA

p.s. I have a 5500 / OZ 3.5.2 (Opie 1.1.7, kernel 2.4.18 etc) / Nokia 8210
