Elsi - Was Killefiz.de/zaurus A Better Format?
« on: February 08, 2005, 06:32:44 pm »
Being well aware and 'MUCH' appreciative of the hard graft that has been put into the new ZUG and ESLI sites I'm expecting a broadside salvo for this one, but for some reason I honestly find the format of Killefiz much nicer than ELSI.

I really don't want to upset anybody but I'd much rather go to the old site than the new one for available Z app's.

Maybe I'm just getting old - is it just me.

I'm not complaining much. At least, an input field on the homepage of ELSI for quick search should be a must. I don't want to hit that search button then... type.

I agree with you saiten.

I find the site too complex and cumbersome compared to old site.

Also, many links don't work....

But don't want to be too critical as this is volunteer effort, which I applaud!

The ELSI site is a work in progress that has some bugs (as all unfinished projects have).  The creator (dz) has been very busy lately and I am sure when things settle down some he will continue to improve the site (put the new background on, etc.)  Hopefully the ELSI site will (although Killefiz.de was great) become better than the last.

Now with the broken links issue it is up to the community to submit a report!  There are hundreds of projects and it would be nearly impossible to find them without your help so if you see a broken link or windows software PLEASE REPORT IT!!!!!

Thank You and DON'T LOSE FAITH IN ELSI YET!!!!

My point - with huge respect for all the work & commitment to the new sites - is that when I go to the new ELSI site on my 760 it's not so easy to get an instant view of all latest available app's in a single line format - I'm a sad old git but it was great for me to take a quick glimpse from work to see if there was any new updates.

Not so instant now.

I apologize for the elsi not being up to par yet.  As jcroto said, I have been really busy lately and that's why I haven't gotten to program it.  On the plus side, I have gotten another programmer from the community who is going to continue development.  I am releasing the elsi source code under GPL (http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/elsi/) so even if I'm busy, it can be worked on.

I've gotten all your suggestions and I have read each and every one.  It's just right now I'm just starting a new job in a new place and offroadgeek is in the middle of moving to a new place so everyone's been busy.

If you guys would like to help better the elsi, why not sign up and help with the development?  The more people we have working on it, the better it will be.  There are still many issues to be resolved, but I'm doing my best to find time to get them all taken care of.

If you want more info on getting involved, check this thread: https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...t=0&#entry64130

If you can't program, you can still help out.  As jcroto said, there are too many projects for our short list of mods to be able to fix on their own.  This is why everyone, members and non-members alike, can report projects.  You guys find the broken links / spam, report them, and we fix them.

Again, I apologize for not being able to work on it as much.  Hopefully though, development can kick back into full gear soon.

I am also very respectful on what dz has already crafted - and the main issue of killefiz has been solved by a different concept (the growing queue of unapproved software updates).

Nevertheless, I agree especially with the comments on the information density of  the home page. I don't know if that changes with the new layout, but I would certainly prefer to have that single-line per new package.

It is the same thing as I am used to from www.versiontracker.com and www.macupdate.com  I think they have experimented a lot and have their reasons why they do it in that way. Wyh shouldn't we copy a good working concept (or is that already patented?).

(BTW: I am also bemoaning the simple headline view of the old ZUG one year ago. That was very nice to see what is going on and if it is interesting to jump into a discussion. Now I have to go to the New Posts view and scroll through 5 pages a day).

@dz:
Is there a chance to find a way to share the source code of ELSI - so that others could look into and make proposals (e.g. plugins) for such additional functionality?

Thats exactly what I think is the problem.

What I want is a front page with 30 lines - 30 packages with date and a small description, not 30 packages the 2 first packages take 15 lines, so you have to scroll down forever to see whats new.

When i do a search its the same thing, i was 1 line by packages, then I can click on it to get into the project. Thats the way i see it  I think thats how kilefiz work too isnt ?

Most definitely.  That is why I'm releasing the code at Sourceforge.  I'd love to have others put more into the elsi and make it a community-wide project.  Check my post above for more details on that, or just visit this thread: [a href=\"https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=10380&pid=64130&st=0&#entry64130]https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...t=0&#entry64130[/url]

The main issue now is my lack of time, and having others work on it helps alleviate that problem.

At this point, I am still able to access http://www.killefiz.de/zaurus/search.php?q=at and http://zsi2.stonekeep.com/

I checked out some of the links, and they seem to work.

The database that the elsi uses is a direct copy of the one that the old zsi had.  Sven gave us a copy of it.  Ours just has a lot less spam and more fixed links.

Mabye you guys should make a "Suggestions" Topic, sticky it, and try to gather the best suggestions so they can be implemented in newer versions of the ELSI.

Or just sticky this (And change the Title to something more obvious):

In my opinion, the best layout would be a slightly modified killefiz.de/zaurus scheme, with different colour options. Elegant, very efficient, and far easier to use on the Zaurus/Embedded Linux device. Perhaps if someone with more programming knowledge could at least offer the original site layout as an option? EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the current layout, a lot of effort was put into it, I just think it's functionality is lacking at the moment. Oh, and the Cacko 5000D/5500 project's homepage is broken.

The capability for multiple layouts is already in the elsi.  It was going to be a little 'surprise' thing that I had added and never got around to activating.  It's simply a lack of time issue though; I don't have any

A 'SEARCH' bar on the frontpage is a must - 'I believe' !

Putting a search link and then going to the search page is too many clicks when you trying to find that particular app from the zaurus itself.

But I totally understand that its all going to take some time and everything will get ironed out as we move along. The important thing is moving along.
