Is It My C760
« on: February 08, 2005, 10:00:43 pm »
Sorry to anybody on this forum but I just cant see/cut it with pdaxrom. Ok running x on a pda (especially with a linux kernel) is a cool idea, but I've tried most pdaxrom options and the lag is unbearable.

It's just unusable for me. Infact it's embarassingly slow.
Damm is it slow.

Roms built for the Z as a PDA are soooooooo much quicker, Why not respect the fact that Z is an amazing PDA product , the cpu is teeny weeny and wont deliver x-server PC/Server Desktop/server requirements to the level that pdaxrom imply.

Don't offer PDAXROM as an alternative to a PDA rom, It just isn't.
Fast access to anything isn't possible with PDAXROM.

I feel that PDAXROM developers are trying to overbear a vunerable & well established Zaurus community that want a fast and reliable PDA that runs on linux.

The new Zaurus Software index was swamped wit Xrom untested and unrealable releases.

Keep ZUG open minded and dont be bullied by pdaxrom propagander.

Duder,
Zaurus = Linux PDA = Open Source options = Choice.  Freedom of choice.

I bought a CL860 FOR PdaXRom and ditched the default rom in the first hour and never looked back.  That's my story.  Yours may be different.  That's the beauty.

Don't harsh the mellow...

I think the usage of UPPERCASE or [span style=\'font-size:21pt;line-height:100%\'] some large fonts [/span] would have been appropriate for posting a troll like this

(oh and btw which new Zaurus Software Index are you refering to? pdaxrom stuff was most of the time not posted in old ZSI and I have not been able to find pdaxrom stuff in the new elsi either)

The chances are it's not your pda - it's just you! Take your whinging to your mama.  (Make sure you're using 1.1.0 RC5+ and not 1.0.5)

Oh - and when you do, come back and apologise to the developers.

Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.

This is me not flaming back:

pdaXrom is just another option, one which we like quite a bit.  I also have a C860 and I have never considered changing ROMs to a modded sharp, OZ or any other.  I also have a 5500 with OZ, which is very nice.  However, the fact is the C860 is a far superior device, and capable of much more.

This is me annoyed at someone who is obviously trolling:

Shove it and go bitch about this in your lilvejournal.

I don't even wan't to go into this ;-)

Btw. I don't even think there is one single file regarding pdaXrom on ELSI. When i get some time off from my "real" work (i om only using 1-2 hours per day on pdaXrom a day at the moment - but im not crying) i will build the server and we will have very cool software feed..
C760 running pdaXrom lastest ;-)

ya, one post shouldn't send people into a tailspin.

you know what, pdaXrom works for me... love it..
on my 760.  I wouldn't do anything else.
on the 700 -- it BARELY runs... but it runs.

cacko qt -- runs, but gets slower and slower ... on 700 --
just me? perhaps... just this release? perhaps.
is cacko qt bad?  not really -- but it might be unusable for
me now.  I'd still recommend it over sharp.

OZ!?  OZ/OE makes my 5600 useable!  in fact, OZ makes
it fun.  Is OZ perfect?  hell no, but I'd take it over sharp on
the 5600 anytime.

I don't expect the pdaXrom to be as fast as my 3GHz pc
with 2 GB RAM -- but you know what, it *is* capable, and
I *do* have the choice.

Thank you OSS / CACKO, etc.

What I appreciate is not the perfect roms, but the
freedom.

Scott

Saiten,

I have a C860 and pdaxrom ... I am no linux expert... I installed it, coupled with some applications ... and it RUNS TRULY SPEEDY ...

BUT THEN HERE IS THE EVENTUAL TRICK TO YOUR PROBLEM:

Are you installing into a SD card ? maybe your SD card SUCKS ! it takes LOADS of time to do the I/O Bussiness ... heh

I can tell that loading FIREFOX in my C860 takes some solid 20 seconds ... but if I look into the "CPU usage" bar, it is not at full (or event at 50%) most of the time: READING SPEED SUCKS in my Secure Digital Card .... I KNOW it I HATE IT, it slows down the whole thing.

On the other side, (not that it is such an overhead) I assume that applications fully grown, like the ones that pdaxrom can RUN once recompiled, with their tons of libraries, etc. are BIGGER, way BIGGER than the "Sharp" rom ones.

Other than that, C860 with pdaxrom feels quite decent on speed.... I think that pdaxrom is a fine tuned piece of code, crafted with care, which is getting better day after day  ! So, saiten, please be more specific and technical about your rants and maybe we can find what is wrong in your case.
Enrique

I put Firefox and Thunderbird on / because of the read speed bottleneck.  However, I still find that Thunderbird takes quite awhile to load, and runs rather sluggish; I also think this is more to do with the application than the device/pdaXrom.  Firefox also takes a consdierable amount of time to load (I have Minimo installed too for quick things), but it runs smoothly.
