Replacement For A C860 Screen?

If anyone knows if it is possible to replace a cracked (sigh) screen on a C860, please advise how to go about it.

I would expect it to be tricky, but not impossible to do the swap-in.

Getting hold of a screen is the hard part - but you can probably use the screen from a 750 (older model) or 760 (identical to 860, different coloured case and different initial software).

My top tips for dismantling things:
1) use a baking tray for cakes/tarts etc with individual "bins" to store screws.
    number each bin.
1b) make sketches as you go, so you know which number screw belongs in which hole,
1c) record which screws used nut-lock to prevent coming apart with vibration

2) use a digital camera as you go to record progress
3) don't do this in a carpeted area
4) use a magnetic screwdriver
5) ensure you have "nut lock" on hand when putting things back together, you don't want it falling apart or losing screws, but use very sparingly!

This worked for me a number of times repairing laptops, and I've never had bits left over.

This sounds like great advice for this sort of electronics disassembly/reassembly... I've certainly picked up a few tips from that which I think I will make use of at some time!

One question though... Is a magnetic screwdriver really sensible? Whilst I understand that it makes the task of positioning screws etc a lot easier, I've always been worried by the potential of the magnet affecting chips etc?

I believe the screen on the SL-C700 is the same as the 7XX & 860.  Might have better luck finding a non-functioning 700 with the screen intact at a reasonable enough price since it is the oldest clamshell model.

I know that trisoft fixes broken screens. You sould ask them.

I was just checking through something, and yes, it appears that the 700 *might* have an identical screen. I say *might* because the model is quite a bit older and

- they might have changed the physical mount points/brackets where the screen fits the case
- the electrical connectors also might by physically, if not electrically different.

I think if you google enough you might be able to find enough pictures of a stripped-down 860 and 700 to be able to compare them and verify physical compatibility.

If it was me, I'd probably take a chance. Sharp seem to take small evolutionary steps with the Z, I don't think they will make made any significant changes.

A magnetic screwdriver could save you a big headache in lost screws, and since I'm very sure that there are very few electronic devices which are damaged by relatively small magnetic fields, I wouldn't worry about it.

I could discuss the nature of electromagnetic induction, and the use of magnetic materials in chips but this ain't the place to do it. Ok, just a couple of sentences then!
1) there are new memory devices emerging which use a sort of magnetic storage system, but the Z doesn't have them
2) you need a BIG magnet to be moved quickly near the circuit board to induce enough current to do any damage.

If it were an SL-C3000, I'd still use a magnetic screwdrive, but not near the CF/microdrive.

Its ok.  Bought a second one once I could and used my old sl-5500 to get me through the days.

It's easy to replace the screen - I did that myself. It's harder to get one.  And yes, you can user screen from C700.
