Screen Broke On 5500 - Can It Be Fixed?
« on: March 28, 2005, 08:25:41 pm »
I opened my case this morning to find that the screen on my 5500 is cracked.  I tried checking the internet but am not finding anyplace that fixes them.

Before I give up I thought I would check to see if anyone knows where these can be repaired and what usual cost for this is.

thanks

Replacing my Zaurus SL-5500 touch screen digitizer.

Please note that I won't support this procedure and if you happen to break your Zaurus worse than it's already broken, don't hold me responsible.  It worked for, but that's no guarantee it'll work for you…

Parts / Tools:

New Touch Screen - I never could find anyone advertising a Sharp Zaurus touch screen, so I went digging around for something with the same general shape and size.  The Dell Axim touch screen ($60) works almost perfectly.  There's just one minor hack, but you can see that later on.

Small Phillips Screwdriver

Utility Knife

That's it… how easy!

The Problem:

Here's my broken touch screen.  To remove it, follow the directions in the pictures below and then use a utility knife or small screwdriver to slip between the touch screen and the LCD to remove the broken glass.

Opening the Z:
The first step to removing the broken screen and replacing it is to get the Zaurus open.  There are 8 screws that hold the thing together and four screws to remove the keyboard cover.

   1. Unlock the battery cover and remove the battery.

   2. Remove the 4 screws from inside the battery compartment.

   3. Remove the 2 screws on the top of the Z.

   4. Remove the 1 screw between the IR and SD slot.

   5. Remove all four screws from around the keyboard cover and pull/twist the cover off.  This might feel like you're breaking it.  It'll take force, but be careful.

   6. Now carefully pry and wiggle the case apart.  The top and bottom plastic casing should both come off.  It might take some force, but be careful.

   7. Now, you can use a utility knife or screwdriver to peel the glass away from the LCD.  This just takes some patience.
   8. There's a ribbon cable connecting the touch screen to the Zaurus circuit board, it slips through a slit in the board and attaches on the backside.  You'll need to open that clip and pull the ribbon cable through.

   9. The next step is where the hack comes in.  If you compare the Dell Axim and Sharp Zaurus LCD's, you'll notice that the connector is on the appropriate side of the touch screen, but the connectors on the ribbon cable are on the wrong side.  As it turns out, that's the only difference.  Here was my hack -- you can come up with your own if you don't like mine.  I cut off part of the ribbon from my Z's original touch screen and peeled the plastic cover off the same side as the connectors.  Then, I taped that chunk of the old ribbon onto the new ribbon so that the peeled part of the original cable was in contact with the new ribbon's connectors.  Trim the tape and it should work great.

  10. Then, you can lay the new touch screen in place and start reassembling.

  11. When reconnecting the ribbon, I found that is was a lot easier to remove another partial layer on the back of the main circuit board.

  12. With the two cables connected, there was quite a bit of slack left over.  I let that fold up in the battery compartment.  Probably not the best place for it, and probably not great to have it folded up, but it seems to work.

  13. Once you get everything back together, you should be good-to-go.

Just a reminder that I'm not available to support this repair or help you in anyway.  Good luck!

Plz note that I did not wright this.

Hi All,
my Z screen is cracked.  Since it is cracked I am thinking of
hacking the whole Z into a HP200LX casing, which the
HP200LX screen had "melted".

Have anyone come across a touch screen LCD that is
about 5.9inch (including the boarders). 5.2inch for the
actual LCD.

Thank you.
