Usb Host Adapter
« on: April 14, 2005, 11:58:09 am »
I have looked and looked and looked for this cable, but I can find very few, and those that I do find will not sell to the UK.
I am looking for a short (5-15cm) mini-A male to standard A female usb cable. I want the mini-A plug to be as small as possible, to make sure that it can be used in the cradle and to help reduce the chance of damage to the port.

The iriver one looks good: https://secure1.nexternal.com/shared/StoreF...&RowID=104&All=
but if anyone has seen one with a smaller mini-A plug please speak up.

Firstly, if anyone knows of anywhere I can get this in the UK then I would prefer to take that option.
Failing that (and I have so far), is anyone in the US willing to buy a cable and post it to me? If anyone is, could you give me a quote for the cost of the cable and for postage.

The other problem is how to pay. I think I would prefer to pay via paypal, but I am open to suggestions provided it is fast(ish) and secure.

Thanks very much
Simon

maybe you have another need for this cable but there is no host on the 5500..... so that cable you describe is no use.
Gorgeous C860, 256 Sandisk SD, 1Gig Pretec 40x CF, PDAIR leather case & the really cool retractable iPDA USB sync/charge cable. Powered by PDAXROM BETA 1.

My wish - to have a Command & Conquer style game on my Z! (FREECNC!!!) Simcity 2000 would also be great.

I was considering ordering a couple (a dozen?) of iriver cables, have them shipped to a friend in the US, who would send them to me in France. I could then redistribute them with minimum costs (thanks to the grouped order) for those living in Europe...

Anyone interested? I need to know how many people would like this cable so that I can try to estimate the cost...

I'm interested, provided it's not still going to be silly money.
(I might want 2 if the price is right).

Maybe you should buy a whole stack and sell them as a buy-it-now on ebay every so often.

Have you looked at the streamlinecpus cable?

I'm waiting a bit to see if other people are interested, and will let you know the expected price.

I'm not fond of eBay, and this would mean some additional costs, so I think this would be a one time offer: I order a couple in two weeks or so, including one for me (although I already have found a cable-less adapter included in a USB travel cable kit), and as many as required by other European users interested.

I haven't had a look yet at the shiping costs, but I'd venture that it will probably be around US$10 all in all with the shipping from US to France to another European country included. (just a blind estimate though. The shipping of 10 cables from the US to France should cost in the $10 to $20 range, and shipping one cable from France to any European country is going to be less than €2).

Oh, BTW, bad news: the cables appear to be sold out until June 25th, 2005 on the iRiver website... :-(

No, haven't looked at it (more than having a quick look at their website). It's $9.99 when the iRiver cable is $5, so I think I'd rather go the iRiver way...

Michael Rozdoba just posted on the openzaurus-users mailing list a place where you can find one of these cables:
http://www.computeruniverse.net/products/e90129142.asp

Watch out for shipping, though, as for Portugal it adds 14 euros...

At the moment, here's the list of people who might be interested to order a small USB host cable like the iRiver one or the StreamLineCPUs one:

1 x beowolf
2 x systemparadox
1 x ztep
3 x steliosx
1 x euroclie

So I think I can safely order 10 cables.

The shipping costs for such a small parcel would most certainly be less than US$10 to get it to my friend near Chicago (streamlinecpus mentioned a US$3 cost for shipping 5 cables to Chicago, I don't know how much iRiver charges for such a delivery), and then, to be safe, let's consider a US$20 shipping fee from the US to France for the same parcel. After that, shipping every cable individually to other European countries would cost around $2 per cable (rough estimate).

All in all, I expect something close to US$5 of shipping fees per cable. I don't think that I'll have to pay custom taxes for such a small number of cables, but that might happen, though... (VAT is 19.6%, and there are other taxes and fixed fees involved as well... Unlikely to happen, but I'd rather mention them just in case, so that people can factor them in and have a good surprise in the end, instead of ignoring them and finding myself with unwanted (a bit more) expensive cables at home!

So if we go for the iRiver cables (which are backordered until June 30th, at the moment), that would be approximately US$10 (best case scenario) to US$15 (worst case, with custom fees) shipped to your door (in Europe).

For the StreamLineCPUs cables (US$10 iso US$5), that would be US$15 to US$20, but the cables are readily available.

I can wait a bit (especially if you guys decide to go for the iRiver cables), and see if more people are interested, this might lower a bit the final price (though not by much, one or two dollars, I'd venture...).

OTOH, I'm not willing to handle a mass order of dozens of cables to ship individually afterward (hey, I have a daytime job, too!  ) and I don't want to spend too much cash in advance either ($100 or so is OK, though)...

As far as getting my money back is concerned, I have a PayPal account, and I'm open to any (sensible) suggestion for those who do not want to use PayPal...

Let me know what you guys think about all this: does the resulting price seem right to you? Are you in a hurry to get the cable and ready to pay $5 more, or do you prefer to wait two months? If we were to reach, say, around 20 cables to order I could order half from iRiver for the patient/broke users, and the other half from StreamLineCPUs for the rich/impatient ones...

Last note for those who would find this message in a few months/years from now (April 2005) using a search engine: I'm not opposed to doing this again from time to time to help the community, but I don't intend to do this on a regular basis...

dear euroclie

thanks for the nice initiative

speaking of myself, I would _definately_ prefer to spend a couple of bucks more to get them faster!

so count me in for either order, and paypal is my preferred method to send money too!

thanks again for your time & effort

Anyone looking for these cables might want to talk to Marc at TriSoft because he's providing such a cable with every new SL-C3000 that he sells (maybe the 1000 too.. I don't know).

I've got one of his cables and it's really well made.

OpenBSD 4.2 -current on full 4Gb of SL-C3000
Microdrive replaced with 4Gb SanDisk Extreme III card

OK, that's two users (and half of the cables) in favor of the StreamLineCPUs cables. (as for me, I'll join the decision of the majority, whatever it is...)

Oh, BTW, I just received a kind proposal from them (StreamLineCPUs), they can make us a "special ZUG user" price for such a group order, which would make the cable 10% cheaper!

ztep, systemparadox, would you wait two months or throw $4 in the basket?

If all people prefer the faster option, I agree.
Another question: what about the quality?

Regards,
ztep

P.D. I agree to pay using Paypal
