Install Packages
« on: April 17, 2005, 07:37:06 am »
Hello,

im trying to install some Opie PIMs i have downloaded. i have all the ipks in an SD card, but when i try to install one, i always need to install more and more packages. I have all in the sd card, but the package manager dont recognize/install then automatically, and do it by hand is horrible. Please, gimme a solution (i have no Wifi card to do it over the internet.). Thanks.

Create a local feed - you need to create a Packages file. Try using ipkg-utils from the handhelds cvs unless there was one (Packages file) where you got the files - in which case place that in the same dir on your SD card and add the dir as a local feed.

ok, thank very much. So, i must create anb ipkg file with all the packages i would like to install and then ... (please, escecify a little bit more, cuz im a newby), and thats all. i hope that it works.

pd: it could be a package a file named something likeopie-1.0.3.tar.bz2  ????. that file is in the same place where the PIMs i would like to install is. (http://opie.handhelds.org/feed/unsupported/stable/source/)

Thanks for all.

This is the source, unless you have a cross-compiler set up you need to find a feed with the binary packages (called *.ipk) in it.

The Packages file is just a flat text file which contains info about each ipk in the directory (it's called Packages).

Look here for example for an example feed directory, some ipk files and a Packages file: http://familiar.handhelds.org/releases/v0.8.2/feed/updates/

Create a directory, place ipk files in it, create a Packages file (ipkg-utils, or copy and existing one), add the directory as a src entry in /etc/ipkg/some-new-feed-name.conf (copy one of the existing ones and edit the contents, using file:// instead of http://)

They may not be real problems - ipkg attempts to produce symlinks for each file and directory in the package - some of these will exist already (the directories) so the symlink will fail, but this is not a problem as any files in the directory will already have been symlinked.

Hi, now i could install all the packages without any problem, but when they are installed, the opie told me that it couldnt find the package (fe, snake.ipk, media player). And something more strange, some of the programs included in the opie also didnt work (like package manager).

Plz help me.

Where did you install them? Did you restart Opie (to refresh the icons)?

I understand there are still some issues with package manager, however it does run and work to an extent. I never use it, I always use ipkg from the command line so I can't comment on it specifically.

Actually the only problem i have is that i cant access the new PIMs i install, because the system tell me that it cant locate the packages. I dont know if its because the linking ptoblems or what, but i think is a bit strange. Maybe is because im using the opie 3.5.3 (so new ???).

Thanks.

I don't think it's because OZ 3.5.3 is new, I've used it and not had any troubles.

Can you post the exact details for one of your non-working packages please? E.g:

What the package is (and where it came from).
Where you tried to install it.
How you tried to run it, and error messages you received.

i download all the package form here:

http://opie.handhelds.org/feed/unsupported...ble/openzaurus/

i have also downloades some other libraries that the package manager told me that were needed:

libc6
libjpe62
libpng2
zlib1g

i installed those libreries in the sd card.

the rest of the packages ive installed it in the sd, ram and root (everywhere, just to try if there i have no problems). Then i press the upgrade option in the package manager (ive also tried not to press the upgrade option).

Then, i go to the icon i have on the desktop and try to execute the app, but then i have the error: "could not locate the application ... snake, opie-sheet, opie-irc, opie-mail, tetrix,..."

Thanks.

Do you have any suggestion of what the problem could be ?.
