About the 6000 - from Linuxworld NYC
« on: January 21, 2004, 10:19:47 pm »
well, saw the SL-6000 for the first time - and boy, is it Sharp and cool ?
Its bigger than the 5xxx series and the screen is a looker.
Anyways first impressions were better described by offroadgeek, so I will skip that.

The IBM guy (2 in fact) who showed the SL-6000 (as I guessed it was upto IBM and not Sharp),  demo-ed the IBM websphere suite too on the 5600 as well as the 6000. Its a usefull set of tools for those who need corporate connectivity to their back-end set of information.

The thing I liked was that it would also maintain an active session seamlessly as one roamed from one Wi-fi network to another or from Wifi to the 1xRTT network.
They also had a Sametime client running on the Zaurus.

Talking about the Cxxx series, even the IBM guy was all for the Cxxx form-factor and like why doesnt Sharp release that here in the US. I guess its Sharp\'s investment in the 6000 for the US market already committed that they want to keep the Cxxx away from the US market
As for the SL-6000, probable release date according to him (no commitments) was like 1 or 2 months still at a probable price-point of $600 for bulk enterprise orders (no idea what a bulk order would be like) , since they were also still working on the code too.

But seriously, this beast does look and feel like a serious gadget for the enterprise and not any toy thingie - what with its drop-dead black coolness and more heavier and bigger size.

Also Sharp guys may be in tomorrow in the IBM booth. Today it was just the IBM guys who demo-ed the 6000.

Darn, I was at LWCE today and didn\'t see the 6000 at the IBM booth, I guess I\'ll come back tomorrow or Friday to see if they still have it. Noticed only one guy with an SL-5500 at the LILUG booth. Anyone else from here attend?

I think a bulk order is 20 units. Another thing, I think the WebSphere Everyplace Server (WEA) can run on the CXXX models too. I\'ll give the demo a try.

I cant wait 1 or 2 months, see if you can swipe one from the booth for me.

Actually I have a question, Offroadgeek may be able to add to the answer as well. Sharp said the 6000 will withstand drops from 1 meter, nuclear explosions, ect. From the pics Offroadgeek took it looks like the black part of the unit is rubber. What is the construction of the case? Thanks.

you can find it here.  I wrote an article for the site, it\'s not in the forums...

The unit that I looked at in October was a prototype, so I would assume that the unit nilch saw was more production ready.  That said, I don\'t remember the casing being rubber or anything special.

Looks wise (frm the pics offroadgeek took) its the same.

Does look and feel a lot larger than the 5500 size, but also it feels like a real solid computer n your hands - what with the better screen (does read better in daylight acc to the IBM guy), the built-in wifi-bluetooth etc.

The back part is not rubber - seemed like a metal plate on the back of the unit with the CF slot and the smaller SD slot lined up one in front of the other. That makes the unit much thicker, since the SD is not on the side like the 5500 units.

The rotation from portrait to landscape works like a charm, at the touch of a button - though its didn\'t seem instantaneous - more like a press for 2 seconds.

The IrDA port is much bigger in comparison than the 5xxx models. Wonder though if its more powerful.

Maybe the bigger IrDA port allows \"consumer IR.\"  Could be useful to adjust the brightness on the projector in your sales meeting, as, of course, any  \"enterprise customer\" would want to do.

Hey, if anyone else sees an IBM guy, could they get a name, please? As an IBM guy myself, I can then look them up on the internal directory and find out if anyone has been porting IBM software onto Z

The strong case will be great feature. I am planning on getting a 6000 in like 6 or 7 months. I am still using my handspring Visor Prism. I have cracked the case in two places, and I havent dropped it yet either, had it over two years.

The button used must have double action, like the menu/light off on the 5500, so that could justify the 2 seconds button press.

Or it could be a \'feature\' so that you do not accidentally keep rotating the screen. After most people probably do not want to constantly switch between portrait and landscape every second

Sounds like the price is going to be higher than the quoted Japanese prices, for the regular consumer at least

IBM have been porting a lot of their enterprise software:

What\'s your source?  I\'ve seen a lot of different rumor and speculation about the pricing.
