I have had times when I have had a mis-post for one reason or another, and It would have been very handy to have the option to delete the post.

Is there a reason there is no "Delete" option?

If not, could it be implemented?

there is a delete option... it's just reserved for the mods/admins.

if you want a post deleted... just PM a moderator or admin requesting it.

there is a "delete own post" option that I could enable, but I'm a little leary to do so... would others like to chime in with their thoughts on this?

Could it be enabled so that one can only delete a post if it's the last one in a thread (then double-posts could be deleted).

Might also be worth enabling this (if possible) for new topics which have no replies (again to remove double posts).

Actually, I'm admin in the OZ forums (or at least I was) and I can't delete posts either (though I could pin/close/etc. the topic, so I'm at least partially admin-like).

Any ideas about this? (I was going to delete a couple of double posts which had been marked as such)

Apparently I was a bit paranoid when we had the latest version of the board software.... in the old version when a post was deleted, it was gone for good. There was no way of retrieving it, even if I wanted to.

In the current version a "trash can" was implemented, where if a post is deleted it's moved to this "trash can". And an admin can see the deleted post, and retrieve it if so desired.

That said, I've enabled the feature for all members to delete their own posts. I'm sure this will work well when someone accidentally makes a double post, but I'm not sure how it would work if someone creates a new topic and there are no other posts, and the person wants to delete their post (technically it's not only a post, but a topic too). There's an option for members to delete their own topics, but I fear that someone will decide to delete their topic even after it has 50 posts.

Also, I've enabled the feature for all moderators to delete posts (whether their own or others).

IMHO I think it would be a better (more secure to preserve data) choice if a user could only delete their last post... if this is possible?

Yes, only let users delete a post if it's the last one in a thread - likewise let them delete a topic (which they've started) if their initial post is the only one there.

This will let them delete double posts quite happily but preserve everything else,

I would like to share this info with you...

I am the thread starter for this thread, and there is no Delete option for me in my first post, which looks like that is the way it should be.

Also, FYI, on another forum which I frequent a lot (namely Opera Web Browser Forum), there is a 24 hour time limit for users to edit/delete a post.

After that, you have to request it from a mod/admin.

Maybe this would be something to consider.

If you check a thread that you started, I don't believe you have the option to delete your first post... I don't have that option?

Unfortunately allowing a members to delete only their last post is not an option (that I know of) with this forum software. The only two options are for a member to delete their own posts (any post of their own, but not other members posts), and the other option allows members to delete a topic (or thread) they started. With the latter option, I'm not sure if a user can delete a thread they started after others have posted replies in their thread, which is why I haven't enabled that option.

Even with members being able to delete any of their own posts, admins (not moderators) have the ability to retrieve deleted posts.

If for some reason people go crazy with deleting their own posts, I can always disable the option again.

Sounds like a nice feature, but we don't have it.

Nope.. for this particular forum (site suggestions...) you are simply a member. So with the "delete your own posts" feature enabled, this is normal now.

If you go into a thread for one of the forums you are a moderator for, you should see new options (probably in the moderator pull down list) to delete the whole topic or individual posts within a topic, which of course you should use with discretion.

This is normal because technically the first post is also it's own topic, and since members can't delete their own topics, the first post in the topic can't be deleted (at least that's how I understand it to work )

Okay, I hate to say it, but I'd be tempted to remove the ability for people to delete their own posts, and just have them mark double posts as such and then let a moderator delete them (I removed a couple of double posts from one of the the OZ forums yesterday), this isn't a major hassle (for the mods) and is easy enough to do.

But this is a reversal of what Offroadgeek has just done, so I'm open to counter-arguments,
