which extra gui in addition to X11 to implement?
« on: January 30, 2004, 10:44:35 am »
well, maybe doing this in a bit dosorganzed manner, but here goes:  I hope later on tonight to get X11 apps to switch in and out like your normal Linux vt\'s.  So, on the first vt, I intend to have a normal login.  The last vt, i intend to have X11.  The second vt is going to be dedicated to one of the type gui\'s that display directly to framebuffer, like either opie or qtopia.  I don\'t figure to do this twice, so I thought I\'d ask here, which of the two, Qtopia (from Sharp?) or Opie (from Openzaurus, obviously) has the better apps?  I think I\'m really referring to PIM apps, but I would appreciate any discussion.  I\'m not that much a user of those type things.

I know you can get qtopia & opie to display on X11 using qvfb, but the way I\'m doing it is far more efficient, makes far more sense for the environment.  I just want to know here, which of the two is better.  The other poll here is a little defective for me, because X11 is compared to the other two, and I\'m after giving X11 *and* one of the other two, not *or*.

This sounds fantastic!!!

I take it this is for the c7x0 and c860 range?

Either one would be totally awesome, and a major technical achievement.

I don\'t think I can help you choose though, as I can\'t make my mind up myself  :?
Zaurus cl760, cacko QT rom. Zaurus sl5500 with TKCrom 1.0.
512mb Kingston cf card, 256mb Sandisk sd card, Lexar 256mb sd card.
Bluemonkey bluetooth card <-> Sony Ericsson k700i for gprs.
Buffalo WLI-CF-S11G wifi card. Haicom 303 mmf gps cf/seral card.

Since you ask for a preference, I would say qtopia. I believe (perhaps incorrectly?) that the majority of users use qtopia still in some form or another. I have a c860 myself and keep watching the X11 ROM developments. My need to synch with Outlook at work keeps me with the cacko qtopia ROM for now.

I would also vote for Qtopia, better look and feel. A also agree that this would be a major achievement. Unfortunately I\'m \"just\" a user, not a developer, so I can\'t halp developing, but may offer me and my 760 as beta testers ;-)

I don\'t know what this decision means anyway? I expect VT-cooperation support for all framebuffer based GUI environments, no matter if Qtopia, Opie, picogui, evas or something else.

qtopia to start with... opie will continue to amaze but at the moment i think most users of C7x0\'s who arent on x11 rom are using qtopia..

I\'m currently using the cacko/qtopia rom on my 760, so this might sound weird, but I would have to go with opie... mainly for the opie pims.  as they still use the xml backend, it would provide syncing abilities for both windows and linux users.

I don\'t know about it being any huge advance, because I got a lot of help here and there, but it IS workign right now, at least, the X server is swithcing in and out right, along with a login on the other vt\'s.  Next stop is to do it with hotkeys.
