Which Zimage Should I Use For My Sl-5500?
« on: July 28, 2005, 12:26:19 pm »
Yesterday I was given (yes, given) a fully-functional SL-5500.  It is currently running the Sharp software which was upgraded to the 3.10 ROM.  I would like to run OpenZaurus and OPIE.  Here is my hardware configuration and I am looking for guidance as to specifically which zImage I should use.

My unit is an SL-5500
It appears to have 32MB internal memory
It has a 16MB CF card
I have a 512MB SD card I intend to use with it.

Last night I tried a couple of different zImage files (carefully following the instructions).  I have a CF card reader that I used to copy the files and I made certain they were in the root directory.  I attempted to flash several times (who came up with that crazy C+D+reset combo?) and I always get the same result: green and amber blinking lights.

I'm thinking about buying a new CF card, but I was hoping for some sage advice also...

I'd go for 64-0 and install stuff to the SD card (leave it in the machine) which you should format as ext2.

Before buying a new CF card, try reformatting it, and possibly removing and re-creating the partition.

SL5500 OZ3.5.4 (Opie)

WinXP, Mandriva

Si,

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm really anxious to get this going (and a bit frustrated).  I was up until 2:30 AM wrestling with this...

I did try reformatting the CF last night using my wife's laptop (XP) and I formatted it as a FAT partition.  Should I format it using Linux? Would that make a difference?

Also, can anyone offer any insight to the "blinking green and amber LEDs"?  I'm tired of seeing them when I try to flash and it is a bit frustration that it appears to communicate nothing more informatiive than "something went wrong".  As a Linux user since 1997, I'm used to having more information available to me to track down problems.

Again, any helpful advices and suggestions is sincerely appreciated!

Everything's working great now.  Turns out my CF card was bad.  Thanks for the help!
