RELEASE: Gentoo For Zaurus 0.2.2

Release Notes for Gentoo For Zaurus 0.2.2
------------------------------------------------

Welcome to this new release of Gentoo For Zaurus.

In this release we added kernel sources which will allow emerging some more base packages. We have been reordering the base layout, to be more gentooish. We added tbz2ipk.nodev which removes the development libraries from the resulting ipk, making it smaller (thanks Fiore).

We have to give many thanks to Fiore Basile, who has been working hard on this release, compiling many packages (artwiz-fonts-2.4.tbz2, dillo-0.7.3-r4.tbz2, icewm-1.2.14_pre7.tbz2, joe-2.9.8.tbz2, libxsettings-client-0.10.tbz2, matchbox-0.7.1.tbz2, ncurses-5.3-r1.tbz2) and releasing tbz2ipk.nodev. We have the ipk of some of them too. Look at the main feed.

Please, test the \"tbz2ipk.nodev\" script. If everything works, we will integrate both scripts adding some command line arguments.

Our next main goal is the migration to glibc-2.3.2 and a more recent gcc. This is what we have been working this week. We have not achieved that yet.

Remember that the official feed of compiled packages for zaurus is in http://zaurus.spy.org/lekter/gentooforzaurus/packages . If you compile a package and works, please send me a note (fmonera at opensistemas dot com) so I can upload to the main site.

I would really like to get this to work, but whenever I try to emerge anything it doesn\'t seem to get any locks.

# emerge cpio
Calculating dependencies ...done!
]]] emerge (1 of 1) app-arch/cpio-2.5 to /
]]] md5 src_uri ;-) cpio-2.5.tar.gz
]]] /tmp/sandboxpids.tmp fcntl file lock: No locks available
]]] pids file write: No locks available

even trying
# mount --bind /home/tmplocal /mnt/net/gentoo-dist/tmplocal
didn\'t make any difference. Same error.

Any help?
Sue.
Sue.

Did you put the correct parameters on the nfs mount?

mount -t nfs -o hard,intr,nolock 192.168.129.1:/path/to/gentooforzaurus /mnt/net

That was it, I had the wrong options on my nfs mount. Thanks! Now to try and emerge something useful ...
Sue.

FYI:  The packages URL above is correct -- there is a \".\" that\'s tagged on from the post... just remove the
period and the URL works.

I tried this release on sl5500 and it dies with illegal instructions the same way as 0.2.1. ash works, but anything else dies. I checked with gdb bash and ls - they both die in __frame_dummy at bxeq lr instruction

How big can I expect gentoo on a 5500 to be?  I\'ve got a 128mb SD card.  Any info on the layout of partitions?
C860 Cacko ROM | 5500 tkcROM
256MB SD | 128MB SD
512MB CF | 256MB CF
D-Link DWL 660 WiFi| Linksys WCF12 WiFi
Socket Bluetooth | Socket Ethernet

You need at least 1Gb (/usr/portage is 800Mb). If you have a Compact Flash bigger enough, you can have your gentoo without NFS.

I am trying to put /usr/portage on a compressed loopback, so it will be of 250Mb aprox, but it will be read-only.

But the better way to go is to have all the development environment over NFS (including /usr/portage). We have a somewhat long way to go to reach this state.

We would gratefuly appreciate some development help for the project. We are preparing a new web page more developer-friendly.

I look forward to the new web page.  I\'ll try to give some feedback then.

It\'s good to see you\'re still here!

Anyone run GfZ on the 5600?  If so, what are it\'s pros and (in particular) cons?
