Buy Zaurus In Japan.
« on: September 28, 2005, 05:14:40 pm »
Hello,

A friend is going to Japan in a few days and he may pick up a Zaurus for me if it works out.

I'm guessing this is the cheapest method to get a Zaurus as it sounds like from Kahm's postings it's posible to get a c1000 for $450CAN.
...and on price Japan they are 37,500yen (= $400CAN) so you would think you could get them in a store for almost that much. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Can anyone recommend a couple places in Tokyo to get a Sl-C1000 for a good price?

Do I still get Sharp warrenty if I buy it Japan and bring it back to Canada?

Thanks.

i was in Tokyo at the end of July. when i asked the locals for the best plave to get a zaurus, they said mail order.so i had one someone order it with overnight delivery. even with paying the japanese taxes, it was about $100 cheaper mail order than buying in the Akihabara.

The prices listed on PriceJapan's website as the "lowest in Japan" are usually lower than you can actually get anywhere, even mail order. I don't know why. If you go to a big electronics chain, you usually won't get a very good price, but you will get "points" that you can use later to buy things in the same store. There are some small shops in Akihabara where you can probably get a decent price, but it would probably be a lot of work for your friend to get them.

As for the warranty, it's still valid, but only in Japan. So you'd have to have someone who'd be willing to send it back to Japan for you if you needed repairs.

Thanks for your replies, but I'm a little confused. Would't PriceJapan be considered mail order? Maybe I'm not understanding what you guys mean by mail order.

I always get mine from Sofmap in Akihabara or elsewhere - used.  You can get great
used Zaurii in excellent conditions at pretty good savings. New, I agree - not many deals
at the big retailers.

pricejapan also has a shopping service. they buy whatever you want and deliver to your hotel if you are staying in tokyo. saves you having to go to akihabara and searching around if you are busy, but i would go to akihabara anyway just for a stroll. its an amazing place, but be careful, they sell porn openly as well there if that offends you, and I mean japanese type porn which is a bit nasty. pricejapan probably has a deal with some of the retailers so they can get the zaurus and other stuff cheaper because they buy in bulk or buy from them all the time. there is a lot of business relationships stuff happening in japan, much more than in the western world. consumers normally don't get discounts but points to redeem for other things so if you want something cheap, you need an agent, ie pricejapan to get it for you or buy from those places that sell pre-loved, or older models in akihabara.

I got my C860 in this place http://www.wolf.ne.jp/. It is a small shop on the 6th floor of a building in Akihabara. They had a sign on the street with the Zaurus on it. It was cheaper than on the big stores.

The prices on PriceJapan's website are cheaper than you can find else where simply because the lsit the price without Japanese Sales tax - they can do this because they are targeting non-Japanese people. All stores in Japan selling to Japanese (or jaapnese residents) have to display the price including tax. In reality you generally end up paying the same or slightly above the lowest price on kakaku.com aftre they add the tax, then they add the shipping costs (which are overly expensive for delivery inside Japan but okay for overseas delivery)

If you are going to be in Japan for any length of time then hit kakaku.com to get the best price, which will not doubt be in Akihabara. Then go to Akihabara and buy it from the shop and when you leave Japan ask for the tax back at the airport - you should get 5% back on most items

I was a little surprised as well last night to find that there is little savings to be had by purchasing in the Akihabara as opossed to the online vendors.  Even when purchasing from other countries, with shipping added it`s only maybe $10 - $30 difference...and you get translation from most of the online vendors...

Go figure...

Edit: I'll confirm Scot's statements.  Sofmap 5 in Osaka (not in Den Den town...one near the Osaka JR station).  Saw one there that looked to be in excellent shape for about $360.

Anyone have recommendations for buying a Zaurus sl-5500 new from a retailer?  I'm attempting to get 2 for work duty, but need it through an official site/seller so it can be invoiced.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My wife has just returned from Japan with my new SL-C1000 she got it from sofmap not sure of the address in Tokyo but check www.sofmap.com.  she picked it up for 36600 YEN.  They were very helpful and she said they had a massive collection of used units.
