Sharp 4e-mb1 Mobile Av Player

This is announcement is a bit dated, October of 2004, but interesting none the less.  Several sites mention that satellite tv is the hot new thing in Japan and Korea.  Why is the US so late to the party?

I could not find any processor specs on this device, but I was wondering if it uses the new Intel PXA270 processor and the companion 2700G accelerator processor.  If it does have this combination of chips, it could be an indicator that the next Zaurus will possess the same (rumor).

Sharp seems to be making a strong move into the mobile AV arena with this device and several phones (in Japan) that handle streaming video.  I believe it is true that with the above chips a handheld can handle 30fps at 640x480.

Is there anyone in Japan who is able to tell us anything about this device and the satellite tv service?  Or confirm the rumors, from shaky sources, that the next Z will replace the HD with 4GB Flash, come with integrated wifi, and possess the aforementioned Intel chips?

i can confirm that with those chpis you can do 720 * 640 at 30 fps on a 1.5Mbps video stream, if youre video player program supports the chipset (see betaplayer/the core media player and the x50V benchmarks)

Here's the site for The Core Pocket Media Player (TCPMP)
--->  [a href=\"http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/about]http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/about[/url]

I Googled for some reviews on TCPMP and everyone raved at how fast this player is and that is runs full screen, even on slower handhelds like some of the Palm Zire models.

TCPMP info:

Supported file containers
- AVI (*.avi)
- Matroska (*.mkv, *.mka)
- MP4 (*.mp4, *.m4a)
- Ogg Media (*.ogg, *.ogm)
- ASF (*.asf)

Supported audio codecs
- Mpeg 1 Layer III
- Ogg Vorbis
- Musepack
- Windows Media Audio (on Windows Mobile devices)
- AC-3
- AMR
- Adpcm, uLaw

Supported video codecs
- DivX
- XviD
- MPEG4-SP (plus B-frame support)
- MPEG1
- M-JPEG
- Windows Media Video (on Windows Mobile devices)

And the best part is this is an Open Source program.  Anyone able to compare TCPMP performance to MPlayer?

I certainly hope the next Zaurus, whenever it comes out, will be able to show video at 640x480 and 30fps.  I use my C760 as a multi-media platform (e-books, podcasts, audio books, video podcasts, movies, etc) and I would love to be able to handle streaming video without a hitch as well.

on the zaurus mplayer site there is a link to benchmarks that compare against it, the performance of mplayer is good but its not that good.

TCMP was designed from the ground up to be fast on PDA's, Picard used about every trick in book to get it that fast and the resaults speack for themselves. however there was talk a couple of month ago about linux support espesially scince he started supporting Palm which is now going to linux so you never know
