Idiot's Guide To Install Pdaxrom, Xfce4, And Rox
« on: October 04, 2005, 07:32:47 pm »
Hello,

This guide is meant to help people who don't know ANYTHING about linux to install pdaXrom, XFCE4, and ROX onto a C1000.

I finally found some time to try and write a guide for people who don't know ANYTHING about linux.  I've learned a lot in the process of doing all this stuff, and I still have a lot to learn.  Please review the attached guide, help me with corrections, accuracy, and ease-of-use.

Outstanding Issues:
1.  The entire document needs to be reviewed by other people.
2.  I don't know how to get a play list for .m4a files
3.  I don't know the optimal way to format videos
4.  I need to confirm that the CF card is located at /dev/hda1
5.  I would like to specify more about which "goodies" to install, and specifically what they do
8.  I need to figure out some decent emulator / games to use.
9.  This document needs to be cleaned up in HTML format, and hyperlinks added where appropriate
10.  Need to add a list of compatible wifi cards
11.  Need to add the md5 check sum procedure (need help with this).

I hope this is a seed for a useful and complete guide for newbs like me.  I couldn't find anything quite like it when I needed help.  The board search function is.... retarded.

Thanks,

Louis

There is no need to install openzaurus before you install pdaxrom rc11
If you want to resize the partition, just do it in the installation menu of pdaxrom in two steps 1) Fix sharp loader NAND 64MB limit 2) Resize the partition to 121MB, then reboot

Kdepim is working properly in rc11, refer to
https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showt...indpost&p=96992
for more details

Hello folks,

what about the SL-C3000? I remember that I have seen the C3000 on the pdaxrom website mentioned as supported, but when I tried to install it using the given instructions, the installer complained that I have a non-supported machine (IIRC it asked for a C7xx or C8xx machine).

I'd really like to try it on my second C3000, just to experiment with it a bit.

Any hints?

Thanks
daniel

I don't think C3000 is supported yet. If you look at http://212.10.30.205/rc11/ there is no mention of C3000.
SL-C1000 from PriceJapan(cheap and very fast shipping) with EA-70 power adapter, iRiver USB Host cable, PDAIR case, pentopia stylus, ultra clear screen-protector from shop.brando.com.hk only $3 for shipping worldwide
4GB Hitachi Microdrive, 1GB Kingston Elite Pro CF, 4GB Transcend 150x SD, Symbol Spectrum 4137 CF WiFi(low power)
PdaXrom pdaxii13 5.4.9 updated with Kkazakov13's feed. I owned a SL-6000L before

hummm.. i use the default wireless that comes with the 6000
You should know whether you are using the host-ap drivers or wlan.. probably wlan
your interface might be eth0 or eth1
to find out type "ifconfig" when your using your wireless
tell me what you see

Yes, eth0 was my wireless card.  Now, I have a different error:

FATAL:  command 'wlanctl-ng eth0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable >/dev/null 2>/dev/null' failed.

@flyguy :

Nice howto, should be put in the wiki pages sometime.
I was always gonna write one myself, but never got to it. Thanks for doing this !!

Some comments :
- there is no need to flash OZ first
- I never changed the xinitrc.xfce4 file to use rox, I just set it up, saved my session and it seems to work.
- before installing the new version of kdepim, first remove the old version
- nice app for pim-data (note taker) = tuxcards (it's in unstable feed)
- which goodies to install depends on what the user wants, "what is what" can be found on the xfce-goodies site.
- the documentation page on www.xfce.org holds a good (and short) manual of xfce (maybe refer to it to make your howto complete ?)
- most people seem to like xfce without the taskbar so they can use the taskbar-plugin and the systray-plugin in their panel (maybe a word on this too ?)
- I only have xfce4_4.2.2_.... installed in /, the rest is on SD.

You don't have to use this comments, it's just some stuff I would have put in it.

On C-1000 and RC12:

Finally got XFCE4 working thanks to these instructions and some I found elsewhere. It's fantastic! Really looks like a little computer.

However, I have a couple of problems.

I installed ROX and can launch it from within XFCE4; looks great. I added the line to launch ROX in xinitrc.xfce4 as indicated -- BUT when I run startxfce4, the rat screen comes up, then my ROX background flashes for a second, then the rat screen comes back, then XFCE4 opens and ROX doesn't seem to be running at all.

Also, does anyone know how to get CAPS LOCK working??

Thanks!

Usually ROX will stay if you saved the last session.  The rox --pinboard  command is probably sensitive to location.  Try putting it in after the XFCE-session line.  maybe this will help??  I have never experienced your problem.

I'm glad they were useful to you.

Hi -- thanks for the reply -- unfortunately I had already tried both of these things, and neither of them worked...
<<edit>>
ROX does seem to be running, if I look at the processes, but it just doesn't display...

OK, I removed the line from xinitrc.xfce4. And I launched ROX manually, started setting up my session and eventually saved and quit -- this time the session saved fine!

No idea why it didn't work the previous times.

It was probably running behind "xfdesktop".
A solution could have been :
Code: [Select]
# killall xfdesktopThis could by the way save some memory for all who are running rox combined with xfce.
