Thinking About Purchasing A Zaurus 3100..
« on: November 03, 2005, 07:21:47 pm »
Hi all,

Am seriously considureing purchasing a 3100 mainly for use as a portable media player and also rather like the idea of messing around a little with linux on such a small system (Im not a linux expert or anything however, about as far as ive gotten is building and rebuilding a Gentoo system a few times)

As there are a fair few add-ons/modifications software wise that can be made to the Z's I was wondering if anyone here could give me an idea what a good combo of the various apps, roms and hacks would be to install on a 3100 should I get one for the purposes of useing it as a PMP ?

Also what is the general consensus here regarding the screen, how durable is it ?, should I buy a screen protector and if so which one would be the easyest to install, mantain and remove on the 3100 ?

Screen protectors are always a good idea. I really like the "Ultra Clear Screen protector" from Pdair.com ( $12, shipped). It is nearly invisible, can be removed, cleaned and reapplied.

You have to be careful to avoid dust particles when applying it. If dust particles get on the sticky (bottom) surface, use a piece of scotch tape to remove the particle.

- I generally hate referring to others' work, but if it's not on Meanie's site, it's probably not possible.  (cheshire grin)  It's primarily C3K, though a good chunk of it applies to any of the new clamshell Zs.
- Any relation to Cynner?  (wink)

Meanies site has alot of infomation indeed.

One of the things thats makeing me more inclinded to purchese a 3100 is the shear amount of information available on the Zaurus series on the net vs some of the other options ive looked at PDA/PMP wise.

Who/What is Cynner ?

yeah.  You should also check up on meanie's xqt package/crams for the c1000.  I finaly got the abiword and gnumeric to work.  has xchat and a but loads of other usefull software.  sylpheed works off the bat!  very versitile handheld considering you get the best workds between the sharprom and pdaxrom within xqt.

Guylhem wrote an article about why a linux PDA was so much better than the proprietary alternatives... the key one being that your investment:

* time & effort to learn it
* any software you develop, or buy
* any data/media files you create
* any data/media files you buy

will never be lost due to your PDA breaking and not being able to buy an equivalent device to run the proprietary applications with their locked-down DRM data and locked-to-the-device license keys.

simple example. Buy ereader for your palm, plus some DRM books. If palm breaks, and you get a new palm, then maybe the DRM-locked books will not be readable.

you can't really go wrong with linux plus unencrypted data files on a big compact flash or microdrive.

Have been reading more reviews of the 3100 and cant seem to find any up close pics to answer this but is the plastic on the base of the unit(i.e containing keyboard/hd etc) a glossy type plastic like the 3000's base seems to be(but odvisly black instead of white) or is it a rough type plastic ? .. I ask this becuse I find the textured/rough plastics a pain to clean and ease of physical mantaince/cleaning is an issue for me for buying a PDA/PMP.

All I can say is that it is rougher than the c3000. not sure whether it can be categorised as rough though.
