I've been reading the forums, trying to learn about all the different ROMs and setups...

1) Am I correct that pdaXrom is the fastest way to run X apps (assuming I also need Debian)?

2) Am I correct that if I install the chrooted Debian on pdaXrom, I can apt-get any Debian app and it should run (without having to worry about glibc versions, etc)?

3) If this (2) is true, will I be able to get apps from both Debian unstable and stable. Are these based on the same libraries? Can I install some Debian stable apps, and some from unstable?

Thanks a ton, I'm excited about installing all of this but there's a bit of a learning curve since this is my first pda and I've never used Debian (Slackware since 2000  )

Why do you need Debian?

1. You can also use OpenZaurus with GPE flavour to run X apps.

2. You can install Debian under any distro on Zaurus and it will work in chroot.

3. Debian stable differ from Debian unstable - they are not compatible each other.

I need MySQL4.1 and Qt4. pgas was able to compile Qt4 for pdaXrom (thanks again!), but I assume I'll need Debian from MySQL4.1 unless I can get it to compile under pdaXrom, but I'd rather just install the package. Also, it would be nice for all the other Debian apps out there... but not essential.

1. My understanding is that Qt4 doesn't work right now under OE, and it is the main reason I wanted a Zaurus (a single app I'm working on).

2. Ok, cool. Then it's a matter of trying to figure out which distros Qt4 will work on (Qt4 isn't in Debian for ARM I recently noticed, only other architectures). MySQL4.1 is in Debian stable for ARM, so I should be able to get it to work on any distro (using Debian).

3. Ok.

I think I should be able to get it to work using pgas compiled qt4 for pdaXrom, and Debian on pdaXrom for MySQL4.1. Is there a better/faster way that anyone is aware of?

Thanks.

Cool, I guess I don't need Debian then. I assume you mean the pdaXrom feed (although I couldn't find it at pdaxrom.org under the ipk feed)? Please correct me where I'm wrong, I'm new to this... Thanks a ton for bearing with me.

the feed for the latest release:
http://mail.pdaxrom.org/rc12/Zaurus-7x0-860/feed/
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=102340\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

And this has the development libs? I need libmysqlclient so my app can connect to the db. And it will work with the C1000 (it's the 7x0-860 feed?). Thanks again.

I don't know, probably no, but It should not be too difficult to make something about it

It will work with the C1000

Ok, I'll give it a try after my wife comes home with my CF card tonight... I'll let you know how it goes. Any more thoughts about what should watch for would be appreciated.

The end goal: compile a qt4 app that uses libmysqlclient4.1 to run on my Zaurus  I guess I'll probably have to figure out how to have a big swap file and maybe how to setup distcc or something for compiling (or a cross compiler?). Thanks again for everything.
