Feeds Feeds All Over The Place
« on: December 09, 2005, 05:12:10 am »
Ok, I've updated my Z to RC12. After hunting over all the groups for the new kdepim (Really REALLY good compile btw!), the patched apmsleep, the new this and the new that, its really difficult for someone to easily add packages to their Z.   In fact, upgrading from RC9 to RC12 was particularly painful simply because I spent so much time looking for the custom packages.

The ones in the stock unstable feed are quite old or have duplicates or simply fail with the latest RC.

Is there any reason that People don't upload their new packages to the pdaXrom unstable feed? Is the upload and updating part of it still working?

I think we really need a single site where anyone can upload a package, versioning is taken care of, and the feed is automatically generated from those files. Perhaps even have it so 'debian style' people can 'own' a package and be responsible for maintaining its version, and if someone doesn't update it for ages, someone else can take it over.

I also feel that the above could be improved, also 'debian style', in that the pristine source + diff-to-make-it-work-under-pdaxrom can be attached such that one can download either the binary ipkg or the .tgz file containing the source.

Your comments please,

PS - I would have no problems coding something above if that is what is needed, but I do not have the bandwidth to host such a site, though I could naturally put up a proof of concept site.

The upload isn't working for the moment (that's why the packages are a bit outdated)

It's not that hard to put up a system as you suggest, the problem will be maintaining it.

The pdaX team is working on the new site, with a "developer-feed". Let's just give them the chance to get this working, before we put up a seperate system and feeds fall into pieces again.

In the mean time there's always "zaurus.spy.org", where almost everything you find here is mirrored. (if it gets online again).

Sounds good.

Something else thats niggling me... When pdaXrom updates, it essentially writes the kernel somewhere, and then creates a filesystem elsewhere. It does this under a boot environment that reads the initrd file that you download (but using a built in kernel I think? or perhaps the supplied kernel?)

Is there any reason that, say if someone created an update to the kernel, and they just released it as a .ipk file, that you could not perform the kernel flash write without rebooting into the flash menu. IE, as part of the ipk preinstall file, it performs the flash then. This would mean that really an update to a new version of pdaXrom, even with a new kernel, would simply be done via ipkg.

The postinst of the ipkg would just dd it into the approriate mtdblock. No reason why it shouldn't work

Since zaurus.spy.org is down for now, I've put up my "Temporary/Intermittent" feed containing some unique packages.  I would encourage anyone with bandwidth to mirror these ASAP since I can't keep it up for more than a few days.
