6000 Vs 3100
« on: January 04, 2006, 10:23:51 pm »
So I have been fairly happy with my 6000l.  It seems fast, and with a gig sd card I seem to have room to install most of the apps I would need.  My main complaint is its big and I find myself wanting to have both my 512mb cf card and my belkin bluetooth card in at the same time.  So here is my question:  Im thinking hard about buying a sled for my 6000l to solve the need for the 2 cf slots, but it will add to the size and the sleds that i see are $200+ and im thinking that I might just want to upgrade to the 3100.  Since the 3100 has a 4 gig drive/ a cf slot/ and sd slot I think it has enough room for my media, and bluetooth card.  If i read the specs right though it does not have internal wifi like the 6000l.  Internet access is very important to my work so accessing email and the web is a primary function.  Kdepimpi is also very important.  I was hoping some of the people i seen in this forum who have both a 6000l and 3100 can share some comments on using both units.

Thanks

oh and yes either unit must run pdaxrom casue it rocks

6000 Vs 3100

Well i have both and the sled and i really dont have a preference. I would not sell either to obtain the other. Actually this is not exactly true. I have the C3000 and i would sell it for the C3100. haha.

To be a bit more helpful, i use each for a bit different purpose. I like the 6000 better for regular PIM duties and day to day use. The C3000 is much better for typing (keyboard is much nicer) and web surfing b/c of default landscape orientation. I dont really like the 6000 in landscape w/o an external keyboard.

Concerning storage, you dont have the full 4gb drive for program storage.  I dont know exactly what you get with the C3100 but i only have 400mb for storage on the C3000. The rest is for USB mass storage. There are topics that lead you through partioning the drive to be able to use however much you want for program storage but they require a bit of hacking.

Although i have the sled for the 6000, i hardly use it. When i first got it i used it all the time but i like the smaller size. If using the Guylhem rom and underclocking the battery life is sufficient. I also have no need for 2 CF slots at the moment. I will after i get a bluetooth card. I have just ordered a treo 650 and plan on using Blue tooth DUN to connect my Z to the net. Pending i can find a socket BT card? (anyone have one for sale????).

I have not tried PdaXrom at all. I would like too but i have not found a nice  step by step install guide for the 6000 yet. IF you know of one let me know. I am sure it is easy but i would like to read one first.

My opinion is just buy a C3100 and then decide for your self. Prices on Pricejapan are up right now but when they come down i will probably upgrade to a C3100. The only reason i would trade the C3000 for the C3100 is the availability of ROMs. Hope that helps.

That is correct.

Well I don't have a 3100 but I did recently acquire a used C760 so I'll make some general observations.  The 760 is "cute" and has drawn more attention from my colleagues than the 6000 ever did.  I think the difference in keyboard has been exaggerated, I don't find that I particularly prefer either one over the other to a significant degree.  The extra keys and number row are nice, but given that it's not big enough to touch type I find that I don't appreciate that my fingers (thumbs usually) have to move farther between keystrokes.  The 6000 display is bigger and more readable outside, and in general I've always appreciated that the 6000 is built like a tank, whereas the 760 seems more fragile.  I've never been get able to get movies to play at a good framerate on the 6000 if that's important to you, but I hear that the iwmmx on the 3100 helps there.  To me, the biggest advantage to me of the 6000 is the internal wireless, as I use it all the time and hate swapping cards around in fact that's why I got a 6000W so I could have BT, WiFi and a microdrive and a microdrive all at the same time.  And the sled lets me add something else too if I need it.

I don't think there's a problem either way there.  I think the 3000 is the only one that doesn't have pdaX ported yet.

DrWowe: Does the bluetooth on you 6000w work out the box with pdaxrom?  Im running pdaxrom on my current 6000l and the belkin card worked without effort.

Thanks

As of RC12 you don't need a guide.  You download the installer, put it on a card, do the update program, follow the instructions, and it "just works".  When I installed pdaX it ran perfectly out of the box just fine.

But if you insisist here are the steps:
1) Download, put tools.tar, initrd.bin, zImage and update.sh on the root of your card.
2) Push OK-reset to reboot into update mode.  Choose CF or SD card for update.
3) Z reboots into pdaX installer
4) Use the menu to repartition your flash.  The on-screen instructions recommend a size, so just choose that.
5) Push OK-reset to reboot again with the new flash partitions, choose CF or SD to run the installer again.
6) Choose option 1:  "install pdaXrom"
7) wait a little while while it installs ...
8) it automatically reboots when its finished installing and pdaXrom starts.

I'll have to get back to you.  I'm running pdaXrom on my 6000L at the moment.

I personally find very usable the clamshell keyboard (I have a sl-c860). I can type with all fingers, as I do on my laptop.

Me too. It is one of the reasons for prefering the 860 over the 6000.

ATM, It looks like video acceration is better understod on the 3100/1000 than on the 6000. Even so, my 6k ran pdax, played video and games just fine. PdaXrom seems a slightly better "fit" on the clamshells, though I'm comparing rc12 on the 6 to beta1 on the 31. Basically the rom evolved on clamshells and there are a few trivial workarounds you find yourself doing on the 6k to keep up.
The 6k is ruggedized, not something to overlook, and, I believe, can pump out more juice as a usb host.
In the end, If you didn't know about these things and were handed 1 of each with no labels and no objective knowledge of the internals, told they were the same device in different form factors, and asked to play with a few apps for..say..market research, you'd find it very easy to beleive they were the same computer in different housings with different screens.

Probably, though,  if you spent  time comparing video performance (in a custom rom especially) youd realize the better optimization for such things on the 3100/1000.  Even moving terminals around, in some cases, might make you suspicious about the differences... after a while.

As to the keyboard thing... I had a 5600 that I sold for my 6000. Had the 6000 for a little more than a year before I added my 3100. By that time I was so accustomed to the use of the 6000 thumboard that the 3100 keyboard felt oversized and slow. While holding the thing, not putting it on a table, I amstill faster with the 6000, and make fewer typos. On a table, the 3100 keyboard is ieasier for me to use.

one is not really "better" than the other imho. Get the one that has the features/price/shape strengths that suits you best.

I think it is a matter of preference. I had a 6000 and sold it for a 3100. I like the form factor (landscape orientation) and smaller size of the 3100. One minor complaint is that the ir port is not in a convenient location for using landscape with an external keyboard.

What do I miss about the 6000? The large beautiful screen, the built-in wifi (I don't always pack my wifi-card on the 3100), and the better-powered USB host. You will need a powered hub to use USB-powered harddrives on the 3100. Whereas, the 6000 can power many by itself. For instance the 6000 was able to power a 250MB zip drive I had laying around.

Also, for me, I do find it somewhat awkard to type on the C3100 with the wifi card inserted since the antenna sticks out on the right side.
