my reboot and resume/suspend works properly. have a look here:
http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/custom-pdaxrom.html
basically, you need to update or replace halt, init and ide.opts

Meanie: Would this help and be safe to do on the Akita?

I think most of the stuff except for the first section on fixing the boot process should be fine.

Pdaxrom For C3000 Beta2
« Reply #137 on: March 29, 2006, 07:52:55 am »
Okay, so I have now flashed the pdaXrom onto my C3000 too.

The look and feel of pdaXrom is better for me than QTopia from Cacko ROM.

So far I have not installed any additional software packages, just the plain pdaXrom installation.

Some first questions:

* Suspend does not work when lid is closed. Is this intentional? If not, what can be wrong?

* Some applications come up with a window larger than the screen. A "maximise" fits them to screen. But on next startup they are too large again (e.g. Sylpheed, gqview...). Any way around that?

* Running applicatoins used to be shown in the taskbar on QTopia. On pdaXrom they are not. I find it nice to have running applicatoins available on one klick. Is there a way to configure this?

* I tried if there is a task switcher like in Cacko. Pressing Shift-home. But then the screen went blank, USB port LED switched off (meaning power off?) and the HDD LED stays lit. Suspend? With On/Off button it does not come to life again.
But when pressing the "Menu" key the HDD LED flickers again and hub power comes up. but screen is black stil... what happens there?
Now I have to do a hard reset I guess...

* Are there any "users" predefined (such as "zaurus" on Cacko ROM)? Should one work as a user or do most people here work as root? I's prefer working as a user, but would I have to switch to root (meaning terminating X, logging out, logging back in and restarting X) when I want to modify a setting or do anything else which cannot easily be done via sudo on the console?

* In USB settings one can choose between CF and SD for USB-storage.
How can I access the internal MD via USB-storage from outside (provided I have an OS running which supports ext2)?

* Which feed(s) are recommended for the first steps after installing pdaXrom on C3000? I'm mainly looking for productivity tools as always :-)

So much for now. Looking forward to your replies.

Thank you!
daniel

I am wondering why it is necessary to Flash the ROM everytime I want to re-install the HDImage ?

I quite regularly mangle the filesystem while playing and am wondering if I am just adding unecessary wear to the ROM having to do this all the time...

Is there a way around this?

P.S>  Thanks to meanie's pages once again I now have 1 local feed that is a combination of the stuff from his site as well as the C3000 and Additional feeds from pdaXrom.  Just working on semi-automating his changes now ...

Is this still in Beta testing or is it ready for use by someone
that never flashed their Zaurus before?

What Software do you use to sync with Windblows XP desktop

I'm chomping at the bit to try this.

Dev Team does not support this version.
It is not include in main distrib ...

Yes, It is working, read the whole post and you will find some tips to resolve some bugs but not all ;-)

This distribution transform your PDA in a "true" computer and i think it is better to use "true" software like putty, winscp from your "Windows" computer to communicate with it.

pdaXrom is a great rom but not for C3000 owner ... go to OpenZaurus and help Dev Team  to debug the last beta version than bring a "true" support for this hardware. I am  only waiting for the new driver for Video Hardware Acceleration (the same for SL3000,3100 & 3200).

So is this Beta2 the most recent version for the C3000?

(Without some of the funky boot onto hdd4 and such methods I have seen, which seem like one heck of a hack to be running your main OS with...)

I installed pdaXromb2 on my C3000 yesterday- fantastic! My C3k is an entirely different, more powerful beast now compared to Cacko.

Problem is, I'm getting the resume problems you mention despite having tried the emergency d+b boot and fsck and fixing all the disk errors. The system works and seems to be pretty stable apart from the HD light staying on sometimes which requires a reset to get it to sleep properly again. Meanies scripts fixed the reboot and halt problems fine though.

Meanie!

Big thanks for your excellent documentation- I learnt almost everything I know about Qtopia, Cacko and the Z from your docs so I returned to your site when I wanted to install pdaXrom, but their is one major flaw with them right now and a few omissions which would help people, including me, a lot:

* The package feed URLs are incorrect. They're almost right though, just insert /download/ after .org and before /1.1.0beta1/ in the given 2 URLS.

In the Abiword section, please include a link to DesertRats package feed. I really think that aspell and all the popular dictionary files (us,gb,de,fr etc.) should all be in the main pdaxrom feed with Abiword.

Very early in your guide you talk about fscking the disk but don't give the instructions, which are

- remove zaurus battery and power, wait a few seconds

- hold down the D+B keys before you re-insert the battery, replace the case and flip the switch

- power on to emergency terminal

e2fsck /dev/hda1 - or something like that..

I found a thread on this where you said do a e2fsck -f -p -y /dev/hda1

but that isn't even a valid command

Meanie- it'd be fantastic if you could just expand on the USB networking part of your custom pdaXrom guide. I've never used SSH before, but I now know that ROX and GNOME users can use gftp's ssh2 support for a scp GUI and KDE users can use konqueror's fish protocol, Windows users winscp. So now I've enabled the ssh daemon, installed gftp- what else, apart from knowing the IP address and password of the device you're connecting to, do you have to do to form a simple ssh connection? I presume I'll have to copy a key over or something? A short guide to setting up a SSH connection would be a great addition to the guide.

Has anyone released a better kernel or an update for the C3000 pdaxromb2.zip which fixes the HD light sleep problem?

Thanks again sashz, thc, Meanie, OE and all the others for bringing me the most amazing portable Linux 'box' I've ever seen!

I think I trashed my pdaXrom install trying to get scp working. I was told root really needs to have a password set to establish a ssh connection so I ran passwd and changed the route password. However, the next time I was at the login prompt, I typed root but then it says

login: no valid shadow password

before asking me for my username again.

Note that I wouldn't be bothering setting up ssh if I could mount the Zaurus / as a USB disk but I installed meanies updated usb config applet and I could read the disk mounted as a USB disc but it said I didn't have permission to write to it. If anyone does know how to give normal users permission to write to the drive then please let me know and then meanie can add it to his guide.

Thanks!

Has anybody here successfully installed pdaXrom b2 on a C3000 with its microdrive replaced with a 4GB CF card? Is the install procedure exactly the same as when installing onto a MD?

Is there a good guide (pref. with photos) on the net for replacing the internal drive on the C3000? Anybody want to recommend a fast 4GB CF card and a cheap place to get one in the UK?

I'm asking, if you hadn't guessed already, because it looks as if my MD has had it  . I frequently get fsck errors, corrupt filenames and now my desktop settings and wallpaper under ROX have just vanished thanks to a corrupt filesystem. I'm on my 2nd install of pdaXrom now- I followed Thc's revised instructions at the top of this thread. When I was getting disk errors, even after performing Meanies init and fsck fixes, I decided to re-install but this time just performing step 15 onwards, didn't think parritioning the drives would make any difference.

So, looks like I might try re-instaling again but doing the whole install procedure again. IIRC steps 8-14 didn't correllate with the prompts the installer was offering me so maybe I did something wrong during that part of the install? Anything else (apart from backing up) that I might want to do/check before I try another install my MD?

Thanks!

dan

EDIT:

Didn't take long to find iamasmith's guide to replacing the internal CF drive:

https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=19684

Thanks Mr. Smith! Only thing missing from that guide is you neglected to mention what the max power rating of CF card is that will work in the C3000, if you know. Has anyone compiled a list of cards that are known to work well?

I tried replacing with 1 Gb CF card. See earlier in this thread. The sequence of commands at the flashing console is:

mke2fs -j /dev/hda1

mount -t ext3 /dev/hda1 /hdd1

cd /

gzip -cd /mnt/card/hdimage.tgz | tar xvf -

reboot

It works, but there are quite a few errors.
