Flash trouble - your advice is sought
« on: February 14, 2004, 10:18:58 am »
Ok, I hadn\'t used my SL5500 in ages (heresy I know) the last ROM I had on there was theKompany ROM.  I charged it up, booted it once to make sure it still worked, and prepared to flash it to OZ 3.3.5.

So...

I go through the whole C+D CF card flash process, wait for the lights to go out, hit reset again, put the cover back on switch it to Normal Operation in back, boot it up, and....

I see TheKompany splash image with a blinking cursor - it never goes away and you can\'t type in anything.

Anyone have any ideas of where to go from here?  My completely newb guess is that something in the ROM flash routine was buggered up or altered by the Kompany ROM and since OZ doesn\'t overwrite that OZ didn\'t take.  since community.zaurus.com is gone I can\'t find a place to dowload the Kompany ROM.  Perhaps I should try flashing it to the last Sharp ROM?

Anyway, if you have any ideas please let me know.  I realize these forums have rom flahsing questions galore in the archives, but I couldn\'t find anything that exactly covered my problem.

eh - guess I didn\'t need to post after all.  I downloaded the Sharp ROM and it flashed with no problems.  Guess now I\'m back to square one - which ROM to use.

EDIT:
D\'oh!  I\'m such an idiot.  I forogt to rename the zImage.bin file.  No wonder I wasn\'t getting it to flash before.  So now on to OZ 3.3.5 - hope this is a good one cause I\'m tired to trying out different ROMs all the time and never being satisfied.

ejj,

As a side note, I\'ve also noticed this issue with non-compatible versions of the zImage and the ROM.  For instance, I once flashed a tkcROM with a OZ kernel, and received the same result you\'re seeing.  Flash with the OZ zImage and ROM and you should be good to go.  FWIW, I like the newest TKC rom a lot.

Did you check the md5sums of the two files (zImage & initrd.bin) before flashing as these are often problematic (corrupted downloads)?
C750 OZ3.5.4 (GPE, 2.6.x kernel)
SL5500 OZ3.5.4 (Opie)
Nokia 770
Serial GPS, WCF-12, Socket Ethernet & BT, Ratoc USB
WinXP, Mandriva
